The first thing that struck me about the Mercedes A Class, is that on getting in, you immediately look to your left expecting to see a black-and-white-cat and some postbags in the back. The Mercedes design department clearly took their inspiration not from the F1 cars piloted by little Lewis Hamilton (Get rid of the earing Lewis, weight matters, as does taste), but rather the van of Postman Pat. You look out onto the world from a slightly raised seat with no bonnet before you. This is the point where my lack of experience of car reviewing will start to be apparent. I was surprised to be reminded of a 1977-1980 Ferrari 512bb, a car with a bonnet that slopes away sharply, resulting in a view that is very similar, albeit it is quite a bit lower down in the Ferrari.
