2016 E220d AMG Line buying advice

The 'warping' is actually brake pad deposits transfer .

The worst being after some serious braking HOLD is then used , ripe for depositing .

Are we talking 2143 or 1950cc for this 220d ?
So it sounds like using the hand brake is the safest option? It’s the 1950cc. Cheers.

Hi BfgSLKMan,

Thank you for your contribution. Yes, it does help and reassures. I’ve been given the MB service history of the car yesterday and I could see that the previous keeper was advised during the last service to replace the front discs and pads, as they were 77% worn and the discs were lipped. However, they didn’t. So perhaps this could explain the slight judder I experienced during the test drive.

Meanwhile, the dealership has refurbished the alloy wheels and will complete the replacement of the discs and pads tomorrow, so I will be able to do another test drive. And I have been informed that the manager is happy to give us a written warranty, so fingers crossed.
Yes, it would be quite a big bill from the MB garage to have them replaced. I bought BREMBO original pads and disks for the front (they are the same as the ones in the MB box but without the MB price) and it cost me about €300 in parts and my time to fit them (about 25 mins each side). I suspect that MB will charge you the job card labour time even if they do it quicker, so reckon on a couple of hours labour and MB prices for the parts (the MB carboard box is very expensive to make!) so probably a good £600 job at the main stealers

Hi BigJase88,

Just a quick question please. Can the brake HOLD function also cause discs to be warped similar to sitting on the brakes at junctions?

Thanks.
Thats a question i do not know the answer to. I know the hold function applies with a light tap to the brake pedal. Im not sure if this applies front or rear brakes.

I would think it just applied the rear e brake. Its more the just sitting on the foot brake that would be more of the issue. My previous Audi did not have hill hold so i used to just sit on the foot brake which is not great

Unfortunately it's turning out to be a terrible engine the OM654 !

OP . What you potentially have here is a car that the seller will put right before purchase (brake shudder wise) then 5 or 6 thousand miles down the road when the 'problem' returns they will bang on about discs and pads being wear items and fob you off for months on end.

Or you might end up with a nice car with no brake issues going forward. Buying a 6 year old car is always a gamble . Has it got a brand new battery ? Or is it still on the original ? That could be your next expense with winter on the way.

'Warped discs...' For what it's worth My 2 pence worth (worth exactly 2 pence ) is that the whole warped disc thing is a misnomer on a road car . Front disc's on cars like this are typically 10kg's (and more) in weight and very thick. It would take a lot to warp them , certainly on public roads.

The 'wobble' feeling is usually something other than a warped disc.

You are correct about the warping, and having recently swapped my front discs concur about the weight. There is definately something wierd happening and something which I have not had on any other car I have owned (a broad range of old and new cars). Since I know my car is mechaniclly sound then I just have to put it down to annoying (not saying that is right) and not a part about to give up the ghost

My experience of a 2017 W213 E220.

Never had any judder on the brakes always held at junctions on the footbrake.

At 13k pads and discs replaced under warranty due to scoring.

After that no problems at all until the car went at 60k

Hope that helps
