ML320 W163 1998
I have a 1998 ML320 W163 from new. 86K on the clock and fully optioned with 7 seats, wheel carrier etc. Average mileage now 5K. Book Value £2.5K

V. Good condition apart from some rust on the wheel arches, front side wings and bottom wing beside the doors. Otherwise a clean car with expected inside wear and tear for the age. Engine very sweet.

Over the 19 years of ownership it has cost me an average of £600 pa excluding tax, insurance and fuel. Need to add that between 2001- 2010 the car was only driven for about a month per year (working overseas) and not serviced. But the last few years components have had to be replaced, springs, steering hose, wiper motor.

Early yesterday I was driving over the North Pennines East through Nenthead. It had been snowing for some time, so the roads were not the best and the gritters were not out of bed yet. The road out of Nenthead is very steep with a 17% gradient going up and a down the other side.

There were cars and trucks parked at the side off the road that had abandon trying to get up the road. I engaged Low Range and 2nd gear and cruised to the top, stopping to ask the parked-up cars and trucks if they were OK. At the top I looked down and saw cars and trucks again parked up waiting for the Gritters before attempting their ascent. There were no tyre tracks going down the hill, so it seemed I was that first since the snow started falling. I engaged 1st in Low Range and went smoothly down, again stopping and asking parked up car and trucks if they were OK.

Have used the W163 extensively over the past year to haul stuff -furniture, concrete paving, garden machinery etc. to holiday home in North Pennines.

ML has done what I needed it to do

So I am considering buying at the end of this year a W167:

/1/ With a 19 year old vehicle I have all the safety and tech. (no GPS but I use paper maps anyway and I gave away my mobile phone in 2000 and never had one since) would I be buying new tech I do not need?

/2/ Will the new GLE W167 have Low Range? – I may need it

/3/ Depreciation and service of new one (£62K) over 5 years mileage @12K pa = £40K

/4/ Keep the W163 just have rust spots attended to (re-spray) and hope there is no major mechanical replacements (£40K/5 = £8K pa) until 110K miles (5years time)?

/5/ Suffer the 18 MPG? £900 saving with the W167.

Would appreciate your thoughts.

To me it is a 50/50 decision

Just to help you decide :D Some nice discounts here Special Offers
£63k list reduced to £43k etc, I'm sure CarWow etc will have similar deals !
Those are good deals, but they're the outgoing W166 GLE rather than the upcoming W167 GLE.

Considering what you use the car for I'd probably be looking for an 18 month old Range Rover/Land Rover product at that price point. Or even a possibly a lightly used Porsche Cayenne 3.0 Diesel over a new GLE.

The only real 4x4 MB produce is the G class, which is an odd thing for an enormous amount of money.

Two questions spring to mind.

Firstly, at that mileage the ML - rust permitting - has many years' service left in it; I doubt you need to replace it, so why do you want to do so? If it is the lure of a new car with lots of toys, then fair enough. Parking space permitting, you could of course have both, and use the ML for the donkey work jobs.

Secondly, if you keep just the the ML, what will you spend the GLE money on? Drink, women, gambling and loose living, or will you just waste it?

Yes it may be the lure of a new car with toys.

The wine women and song could be tempting.

My wife has a 2016 C Class AMG 250D.

My son in Austalia has a Range Rover Sports Black Edition - not too happy with the drop in residual after 3 years nor it,s offroad performance n the dumes in Western Australia.

Yep so far everyone seems to be on the same page as me.

Still a 50/50 - still trying to convince myself to upgrade in some form.

To be fair, if you buy a Range Rover at 12 months old you will do well depreciation wise, they lose shed loads in the first 12 months and then very little.
Although, even from new they are one of the least depreciating cars you can buy, roughly 50% over 5 years instead of the usual 3, problem is 50% of £100,000 is still a lot of money to lose.

Your W163 is far more capable off road than the new ones, a RR will cope far, far better than a W167.

However, having said all that, if you like to keep them out of warranty than I would much rather be in a Merc than a LR product, don't get me wrong my TDV8 is probably my favourite car that I have owned, but I was just waiting for the newt issue. One thing I will say is I never had to wait for long! haha
Nothing major, but with my Mercs I would happily jump in it and drive across Europe without thinking about it, I would stock up on tools, tape, coolant, etc. etc. before even driving to northern France in the RR.

Why not buy a 2016 GLE for £30k?

gIzzE,

Will surf the motor sites and see what is around in the GLE market.

It would be good if there was as a spec out for the W167 so I could compare but MB are telling me that June 2018 will be the soonest any details are available.

Just be careful on price, you can get a new one with £20,000 off at the moment and if using finance the finance rate on new will wipe the floor with approved used too.

Hence why I said maybe a 2 year old one at £30k? A 1 year old one at £38k is not worth it with new and better rates only £5k more.

One thing I will say with ML/GLEs is once they have taken that 18 month depreciation hit they do really well after that.

I looked at a 62 plate ML350 back in December 2014, it was 18 months old with 21k miles on it and was up for £24k, there were a few like that around, but this one had all the toys on it.
I bet that car with another 40k miles on it, some 3 years later would have only lost about £2000-2500 a year.
13 plate cars are still £18-19k now with 80k miles on them!

gIzzE,

A mine of info...

Yes this what I have found today wrt prices.

But but but.... I want another petrol engine so this dove tails down to a 450 or 43 and a price of +£43K.

I am hoping that the W167 will have petrol engines same as the ML320.

Thanks for the feedback.

It is a problem and imho Mercedes UK dropped all their petrol models just as everyone else started to add more petrol options to the range.

I have a W163 ML350 with the 3.7 petrol engine, compared to the W164 350cdi we had it is so nice.
Problem for me with W164 is the fact it is the M272 engine with known issues, stopped me buying one.

GLE43 would be lovely but well out of my budget at the moment.
To be honest, the GLE400 333bhp 6 cylinder petrol would be better for me, I'm not that fussed about it being an AMG in an SUV.
I would rather save £10000 and have the regular non AMG model, mainly as I simply don't like the interiors on the AMG models.
I like a lighter interior, not available on the AMG lines.

I would just rather have something like this......

I just don't like all black interiors, and really not a fan of two tone seats....

I just find the UKs two colour options compared with Europes 14 options a bit sad.
