212 stone chip

its only surface, clean it up and paint it with chip paint, stop overthinking it.
Yeh I'm leaning that way it just never looks as good as when a pro does it. My main concern however was that I didn't want to do a bad job and trap the rust underneath any paint and make it worse.

Having been binge watching vids on chip and scratch repairs, I would:

Sand with wet and dry, hole punched and stuck on a pencil like the Ammo NYC vid

Treat with a rust treater like k rust or similar

Very lightly and super carefully dib a thin layer of primer on to the metal only! with a cocktail stick. Almost no paint, but enough cover the metal.

Paint with a 50:50 mix of colour and lacquer. Maybe 50:50:25 colour:lacquer:hardener if you can get some hardener. Like the first bit of the vid on the black Merc in the Mirka vid I linked. Over painting the chip for full coverage.

File very very carefully with no pressure, the proud paint chip using the Mirka file.

Polish.
On these tiny spots, if you don't have a DA polisher, just buy some eBay foam 6 inch cutting pads and do it by hand.

The thing I haven't researched yet is where to get decent paint, lacquer and hardener. Could just use a paint pen (to provide you with a matched paint), or similar from the dealer, and mix a little bit in a bottle cap with some lacquer.

I used carpaintrepair.co.uk last time. That was 20 quid delivered. I've got t cut and wet n dry but then got to buy some kurust for a tenner. So 30 quid for the gear forgetting any paint file plus my time. Hmm 100 for the pro not sounding disastrous

Where did the £100 come from?

Is this a quote or an assumption?

For info the last smart paint repair I had was £190 to fix a 10cm scratch on bumper. It took just over 2 hours and the result was excellent.

I think £100 for one chip (not scratch) is probably about average.
Being down to metal, it could be more due to primer (drying time).

So north of £200 in this case is a sensible starting price for guesstimating budget. But getting an actual quote is the only sure way to know.

Whatever you do as DIY, it will be better than it is. Probably you will be the only one who notices it. You might surprise yourself
