272 Engine.

Hi, can anyone tell me what the safe engine number would be on a 272 engine,
i know the problems that the earlier engines posed ie. balance shaft issues, just wanted to know which engines would not suffer the above problem.
Many thanks.

Can anyone comment on the certainty of knowing that a Mercedes with this engine not within the effected range (specified by Mercedes) will not suffer the balancer shaft sprocket issue?

I remember seeing a post on a MB forum around 5 or so years ago of a owner who bought a 2008 or 7 CLS 350 which had the 'hardened' sprocket and still ended up with the problem at just 40k miles. I'm guessing his/her MB was not within the effected range..

Good timing gear would be subject to wear like any engine component particularly if regular oil changes had not been carried out! Mileage is also an approximate figure in terms of engine wear. A car that's frequently had the "nuts revved off it" in the intermediate gears will have subjected the timing gear to greater wear than one that pootled around at 3,000 rpm all the time. So difficult to generalise. It also occurs that a sprocket driving a V6 balancer shaft would be subjected to greater torque loading [ hence wear] than an V8 idler sprocket??

It's hard to say really. - Obviously the people who are most vocal are the ones that have already experienced problems.
The rest of us are essentially just waiting to see if we're going to get lucky or not.

Some people suggest that because it's such a weak-point 100% of the affected engines will fail at some point, but I don't know if that's true of just doom-saying. - I'd suggest that engines that have been treated well; never thrashed, always had oil changes (with the correct grade); will go for longer before any problems manifest.

Looks like I was too slow! - However that echos my sentiments.
