And now she is relaxing in a campsite near Montpellier.

1150 miles in 24 hours. She struggled on some of the motorway climbs changing down to 4th to keep the 80 mph cruise and temperature guage went over 100 deg a time or two but performed well with roofbox and bike in mid 30,s heat with 7 on board with luggage. Mpg was only 26-27 mpg though. :-(

Great stuff and what a lovely bridge structure it is. My wife video'd us going over in our W203 C class a couple of years ago.

Wow! I'm going over the viaduct next summer; I've done the long drop down to and up out of the gorge before, but now I Really REALLY want to drive over the viaduct, and the dragon wants to see Carcassone, so that's enough of an excuse. Is the Autoroute down that way still free, or is it now a toll road like (almost) all the others?

I DREAM of mid-20s mpg....

Toll road. I stuck to toll roads so I could get the drive over and done with as quickly as possible.

I keep trying to plan a driving holiday just for the excuse of going of Millau. I know the only problem will be if I go in the Merc I'll want to again in the plastic car!

I'm only on 80k in the S212, hope the car's going strong in another 250k. Keep up the good work, I always believed we have a duty to rack up as many miles as humanly possible in these fine machines.

Enjoy your holiday, bring us back a nice bottle of red would you?

Regards, Neil

340k so she is just about run in?

Hopefully there is at least enough miles left in her to get me and the family home again :-)

Did that same drive last year down to Narbonne and Carcassone. Great drive, was in an ML420, cruise set at 160' and averaged about 19 to the gallon.

Carcassone - Europe's largest nudist colony is there I do believe:devil::D Oh and an interesting fort.

Update on how the old lady got on with a few interesting motoring themed photos snapped along the way.

Fuel economy in and around the region was horrendous and dropped to 22 mpg mainly because the kids needed the aircon on for a while before venturing anywhere and whilst going the viscous fan was roaring mostly all the time and sapping fuel too.

On the 650 odd mile run from Perols up to Calais we sat at 70mph and she did a credible 29-30 mpg compared to a 75-80 mph cruise on the way down where she only did 26mpg. The roof box and bike really rob economy at anything over 60.

With 3 stops we covered 650 odd miles in 12 hours with no grumbles.from the passengers hardly at all. The next 500 hopefully being dispensed in around 8 hrs

I am relaxing on the M6 toll with Mrs 230k at the helm and really love the way this car just eats the miles in silence. :-) 300 miles until we hit Cairnryan and I am confident that she will get us there.

Anyway enough of me talking sh*** here are a few pics.

There was a lovely old Cat D2 outside a local vineyard and the fuel filler cap was cool I thought

Reached Cairnryan at 6.43 am exactly 24 hours and 1145 miles after leaving the campsite.

We were aiming to get the 7.30 ferry that we have now found out doesnt run on a Sunday. Wall bash!!!!!! 4 hour wait.

So 1145 miles in 24 hours in a 15 year old with 340k on the clock. Well chuffed.....

Excellent mileage.
I have ridden my motorbike over the Millau Viaduct on the way down to the Catalunya MotoGP race. Spectacular roads and views all the way.

In France in a German car over a bridge designed by the British. Could be an episode of Top Gear!

I've done the pass below Milau (before the bridge was built) as well as the bridge after. The views are stunning from both places, but the bridge takes a few minutes whereas the path takes a couple of (frustrating traffic filled) hours.

Be careful over the bridge too - my father got pulled up just after the tolls for a 50Eur on the spot fine for speeding....

Did the Millau bridge last year in a Monte Carlo or bust run with a group off our forum, this was in last April, we left Nice at around 10am.....temperature 14 dedrees, several hours late we got to Millau and its plateau, temp was 0 degrees and snow and ice everywhere!

As we approach the bridge a light flashed up on the dash indicating a gearbox problem, WTF!!!!!......slight panic, it continued intermittently til we arrived Montlucon 3 hours later. Also as we crept up and down various peaks and troughs, the 4200 hesitated on a number of occasions, it wasn't at all happy with the thin cold air!

Everything went back to normal by Montlucon though, turns out there was an electrical glitch, gearbox was fine, did 2600 miles on that trip!

That's what people don't get about these cars. They just waft up the road in such a relaxed way, while creating an air of confidence.

have you got some sort of mileage award from MB?

No, I had thought they stopped that?????

Only one she would be eligible for is the 500,000km one but I have not owned the car from new.
