350CDI running hot

Even on short journeys, <5miles, driven normally (30-50mph) my CLS 350CDI smells hot and has lots of ticking sounds from the front (engine compartment). Not unusual for the fan to be running when the engine is stopped, although the temp gauge sits in the middle.
The engine runs sweet and nothing else appears amiss.

Is this normal for the V6 engines?

It's normal while the DPF is regenerating. You should notice a caramel like smell at the rear and the car will hold gears for longer than normal. Give it a reasonably long run to clear and should be fine.

Mine does exactly the same and they say it is normal and not to worry.
