Not for a moment attempting to disprove you here, but my last two diesels (220 CDis) will rev past 4K in park or N, maybe this is an issue with the vehicles but they did so......

Dont you mean 400rpm for a diesel

By the way, while I believe it's normal for a car to run with the MAF disconnected, they don't always as I learnt first hand when mine went.
