500E/Japanese import

he's got some very nice cars listed, especially that Lotec Turbo coupe. Strange that the listings are in sterling, would have thought USD or Euros would be a more commersurate currency.

I guess UK is his target market mickl as they'll all be RHD :thumb:

I know I shouldn't, but seeing as the Japanese do have problems with the letter "R" it did make me chuckle when I read that the car has "No sclatches"

edit: Looks nice, clean, unmolested example.

I've seen many cars either imported or awaiting import from Japan and they all look to be above average cf. cars sourced elsewhere. I'm not saying they don't have accidents over there, though I'm almost certain they don't grit the roads.

One thing that seems inbuilt in the national psyche is maintenance and keeping things clean, I guess you'd call it being house-proud. Public spaces are immaculately maintained, as are buildings and this extends to personal cars. Add to that the fact that the biennial equivalent to the MOT test is very much more thorough than our own, and therefore more pricey, (first test after 3 years) that you'll find many cars being sold at 5 and 7 years. Added to that, car tax is high and related to engine size (top band >2.5L iirc) and you need proof of access to/ownership of a parking space before purchase means that the Japanese 2nd hand car market encourages low residuals.

This fact is taken advantage of all over SE Asia, Australia and NZ, and even Russia. The fact that the car is in Japan and isn't viable for inspection would put me off obviously, the fact that it's 'Japanese' wouldn't.

Well, we have established the horn works !!

(played his video)

Just popped on a cheeky bid, going to watch this one :)

Good luck!

Are there costs to pay etc to register the car if it arrived in the UK?

Looking at his feedback, it would appear that there have been people buying cars from him who are based outside of Japan and that the cars have arrived in good condition, on time and without fault.

Oh yes, VAT and duty, registration fees, etc etc plus the shipping charge. Just popped on a cheeky bid, I'd assume the reserve is fairly high.

From their website they look to have sold quite a few of these, some lovely hi-res pics and even videos of various 500Es on it :)

Cheers, any idea what those costs are likely to come up to (ball park)?

Some lovely cars on there,

You finished the E28 yet :)?

You pay Duty on (purchase price + shipping), then you pay VAT on (purchase price + shipping + VAT). You also pay an agent to clear it through Customs for you.

Then you pay for it to be trailered to your local SVA/MOT place for the necessary work to be done on making it MOTable. Pay for the MOT test and any unpredictable remedial failure-related work to be done.

Get MOT certificate and a newly filled out UK registration document down to a DVLA office (with fee and any Japanese-English document transation that they want) and wait for them to issue a reg no. And buy a tax disc (not sure if you do that at the same time). When that's done you take that document to get a legit plate made up.

My gut feel is that there's perhaps £3000-4000 of expense on top of the final Ebay figure. Plus a certain degree of hassle and stress (BTDTGTTS)

And then you call an insurance company and have an interesting discussion about this weird car that they can't find on the MID.

You can see why self-importing quickly lost its appeal! :)

Costs noted above LOL, pretty much add 30% plus transport fees - needs a lot of calculation well in advance :)

E28 is mid-restore, looking at adding an E34 this weekend - that'll be three M5s in the house!

(yes fellas, I know this is a Merc forum!)

It is Japanese auction-graded at 4B which pretty good for anyone still interested. However, my calculations based on 20% duty plus 17.5% VAT on the total package, plus £500 for the import handler and registration, work out as a fraction under £10,000 landed and MoT'd using the current £5,100 bid price (reserve not met). That assumes the shipping cost quoted includes a container, and doesn't allow for delivery to an MoT station or any extra cost if the headlights or rear fog lamp needs attention. Window tint looks OK for the UK. If it sells at 10,000 it is going to cost £16,715 on my reckoning. I'd prefer to be wrong!
