500E/Japanese import

Costs noted above LOL, pretty much add 30% plus transport fees - needs a lot of calculation well in advance :)

E28 is mid-restore, looking at adding an E34 this weekend - that'll be three M5s in the house!

(yes fellas, I know this is a Merc forum!)

How you come up with your user name,:dk:

It is Japanese auction-graded at 4B which pretty good for anyone still interested. However, my calculations based on 20% duty plus 17.5% VAT on the total package, plus £500 for the import handler and registration, work out as a fraction under £10,000 landed and MoT'd using the current £5,100 bid price (reserve not met). That assumes the shipping cost quoted includes a container, and doesn't allow for delivery to an MoT station or any extra cost if the headlights or rear fog lamp needs attention. Window tint looks OK for the UK. If it sells at 10,000 it is going to cost £16,715 on my reckoning. I'd prefer to be wrong!

Where did you get the auction grade from?:)

Don`t know how he`s got the grade for that one,but on Japanese auctions all cars have to go through a check so they get the grade up to 5 to inform the buyers of it`s condition. Are you realy thinking about it?

E-mailed the seller. I did put in a bid but I think it will go beyond my safety level for buying unseen. I have a Grade 4 1998 Honda people carrier which came to the UK with just 21K miles and it was in beautiful condition for the year and has cost me nothing above fuel and normal servicing in two years (20,000 miles) other than a precautionary cambelt change as it carried no history.

20% duty? On a used car - really? I can't believe I paid that when importing an R33 GT-R. Though that was back in '99, so HM may be gouging more these days.

Oops!! Manalishi is quite right and I had the wrong country in mind and didn't bother checking. Looks like it is 10 percent duty on a used car plus the 17.5 percent VAT on the whole amount, including shipping. That brings the £10,000 purchase price estimate down to around £15,300 registered in the UK, but it will almost certainly need something additional spent to clear registration and MoT. Way above my comfort zone, especially since my only Japanese friend with a mechanical interest (Ducati and an MG-F he swears is cool in Japan) is working out of Japan for some time.
