500e

That is a sorely tempting car, especially as it's local and reasonably priced

Seems as though the reverse gear issue is a common weakness, the 200k+ miler 500E that was for sale recently with the half leather/cloth check seats had a faulty reverse gear too.

I need another car like a hole in the head at the moment though..

The gearbox issues are likely more related to driving style/situation and lack of maintenance - the 500e has the same gearbox (722.370) as the w140 S500 and r129 50SL. Except the 500e has reinforced clutch packs to handle the extra torque that it's m119 throws out above and beyond the 129 and 140 counterparts.

Lack of servicing the transmission, city traffic stop/start and hard driving without letting gearbox warm up likely contribute to the accelerated wear of the clutch packs/valve body.

Looks tempting, what would it take to get the gearbox fixed?

The side repeaters aren't 124, and they're in the wrong place (too high)!!

Darren

Well spotted, IIRC non UK models did not have any side repeaters so to make the car UK legal someone has fitted W210 units in the non-OEM location ofcourse

No history for over 4 years in the UK is a bit odd, you would have expected it to be enthusiast owned and maintained.

Worth a look though Will?

two ways :either overhaul the existing gearbox or find an equivalent 722.370 from a 5.0 r129 / w140 (pre 95).

Overhaul will likely cost £1000+.

Good used 722.370's can be picked up for £500 and labour charge should not be more than £250. So 750 quid and you're good as gold. Plus you can keep the original gearbox and overhaul at your leisure.

Just noticed that he has added some interior pic,but where is the ushtrey and the gear knob?!!

Would also be wise to factor in Wiring Loom issues....ie check that the loom has either been replaced or the existing one is in good order.

Just prior to buying my 500E (102,000 miles) the wiring loom failed and took out the loom itself, coil packs and ECU....replacement parts from MB came to £3500

No bids at 5k,

Re-listed at 6.5k buy it now!

Would've been a good buy at £5k

Did he end the auction earlier and relist I wonder? Still not that expensive but I guess it'd be good to have a few ££££ for the gearbox repair and exhaust plus a bit of TLC.

Interesting, how much more torque in a 500E then?
