500e

470 Nm in the R129 ... surprised that an extra 10 Nm warranted gearbox changes?!

Are you sure is 470 Bill?

The w140 and r129 M119s are 450NM, which is 332lbft torque.

The 500e M119 is 480Nm, which is 354 lbft torque.

30Nm of extra torque is significant.

The above figures are for the LH M119's, not the post 95 motronic injected M119s.

500e's were only ever availble with LH M119s, so no point comparing to the post 95 w140/r129 engines as it's not apples with apples.

LH M119's in the r129/w140s put out 450Nm. But even the Motronic versions in post 95 r129's/w140s could not match the power output of the 500e m119. Coupled with the better final drive ratio of 2.82 on the diff as opposed to the 2.65's on the r120/w140 5.0 post 95 M119s, the 500E is materially quicker than both.

I wasn't disputing the performance of the 500E, just querying why gearbox changes were needed when the torque difference was relatively small (even 450 vs 480 is only 6%).

Did the SL600 (from memory, 570 Nm) have a different gearbox to the SL500?

But to put that into context, IIRC the 5th Gear fuel test showed a 5% torque increase from using Shell Optimax in one of the cars.

183K, Duff Gearbox, will also have to factor in an engine wiring harness, is likely to have some worn suspension bushes at that mileage, has a rattly exhaust (CAT?) ........£4k absolute tops in my head.

Yep, V12 gearbox is different, totally.

cheers

Hmmm
Went for 4000

Reserve not met

This time with the rear lights and front indicators changed for the later units, the gear knob has also been fitted.

Isnt that a member here?

Anyway, an early 500E with mega high mileage and poor paintwork.

Worth £4k tops in my opinion. I would give it a full respray in 040 flat black, chuck on some BBS CH 18" alloys and chuck on a set of dateless plates.

I know these engines are bulletproof, however i'd rather prefer something with lower mileage and preferrable enthusiast owned/maintained (which makes a huge difference).

Just my 2 cents to any potential buyers.

I had to get the gearbox done and bits on the car but it does need a full repaint but it's still a cheap car lol
