Morning All,

So myself and a friend both have OM651 Powered, 277.9 driven W212 Facelifts. 2013 and 2014.

The issue is that when cold and with moderate acceleration from 2-3, the box can often jolt you forward, then throw you back into your seat. Happens on both cars, but my friends car is getting worse and can happen when kicking down at 80 KPH.

Both cars have had recent ATF and filter services.

I'm trying to get a handle on adaptions and solenoid potential issues, torque converter / clutch lock up.

Does anybody have any more info on this regarding changing solenoids, reading adaption values etc.

Any body solved a similar issue?

Many thanks
Conor

It could be a whole manner of things. Needs to be looked at by an expert.

NB: We have overhauled a few valve bodies to fix this issue.

Thanks.

But I'm just looking for any guidance on typical things that go wrong and where to look etc. I have STAR so interested to hear what kind of diagnostics that can be used for.

My friend is actually a mechanic himself but doesn't have the required knowledge on this box and there aren't really any experts around here. Any specialists around here just say recommended an ATF flush, adaption resets.. and failing that they have told him he needs a new ECU.

Thanks.

How did you acquire Star?

I licences it from MB. Was expensive but worth it.

Why do you ask ?
Didn't realise that you ran a car repair business. There are a lot of people come on here with cloned devices wanting help and the Forum doesn't support that. 👍

Well I don't by friend does.... the guy I mentioned in previous post. I just said I had it to keep things simple.

Because it doesn't matter in the context of this thread. Nobody said anything about cloned units until you joined the party.

You must run a car business too then?

No.

Just pointing out that the forum doesn't support helping those with cloned units but clearly your friend is using a unit with Mercedes subscriptions.

Harsh down shifts (especially in cold weather) were a common complaint on the early 7 speed transmission and was very noticeable on my previous W211 when the outside temperature dropped below 10 degrees C despite a full fluid change and adaptations.

OK fair enough.

I see. And is it fixable. My understanding is the solution is one of two things..

* Software update
* Replacing a solenoid (torque converter lockup).

I think that the are several potential causes. Software is certainly one.

Repairs to the valve body are sometimes required.

I had the fluid changed on my W211 plus a software update, it improved things but it didn't stop it

Not just early ones. My 2014 S204 had (I think) a 7g+ box, which was noticeably clunky downshifting approaching junctions and roundabouts for the first few times when cold and in the winter. Once warmed up it was nice and smooth.
Selecting sport mode helped, but it does seem to be a 'feature' of these transmissions.

Hi would you mind elaborating a bit more on this please. Can I send the valve body to you?

Can you diagnose it off the car?

Firstly the level of the ATF has to be checked doing the proper procedure. Was the correct fluid used? 236.14 or 236.15 depending on what gearbox you have. (Eco fluid or not) Then you need to check the adaption data to see if there is anything untoward in the values. Was the ATF very overdue?

Update the software if there is anything available and then try a on the road re-adaption of the gearbox and torque converter. All this needs to be done before you take anything apart. We don't repair valve bodies here at PCS in house.
