New (to me) ML 420 semms a nice car. Bought from MB dealer who were as nice as you would expect. Have read a bit about troubles with this 7G 'box. In my 100 miles home it seems smooth enough BUT on 3 or 4 occasions around town the gearchange is FAR from smooth. Quite snatchy indeed, enough for SWMBO to remark on it. Is this a characteristic of the 'box or a brewing issue. Its not the enormous shunt/bang some have reported but fairly noticeable nonetheless and quite at odds with the feel of the car at town speeds. Car has FMBSH incl gearbox oil change. I have little experience of auto boxes save for my E430 W210 which was as smooth as silk although this 7G downchanges to give a bit of engine braking as you deelerate by the feel of it. Input appreciated whilst I still have a warranty and also as I have no idea if the behaviour is normal or not?

My 7G box is pretty smooth. I would go back and discuss it with them. It may need a computer update.

Common issue is with the 2 into 1. My car has the latest updates and never does this.

Personally, I just feel its substandard, having driven the following 7g cars I am well placed to comment.

E500 coupe
C320cdi
E320cdi
CLS 350cdi

All of them had some sort of shifting issue, either in the 2 into 1, or the 1 into 2. All other changes were smooth, just slow.

Just prior to having the ATF done 2 weeks back, I was aware 3 to 4 and 5 to 4 where getting a tad snatchier, and now with the change of ATF it is ok.

The 7g box has had issues from launch. I've driven several different models with it and most had jerky changes somewhere in the range some of the time. Problem is a lot of owners just accepted this and did not go back and ask for a fix. There have been numerous updates and improvements to the 7g box and usually with a bit of persistence the dealer can get it right in the end.

Your gearbox requires a software update and a adaptation performed this should cure it only can be done at a official dealer
