8MB Broadband disapointing!

would imagine so. My Dublin results's worse still!

Orange 'helpfully' upgraded me from my 2mb line to an 8mb line ...

Have seen no improvement in performance to be honest ...

Never get near 8 mb , more like 2.5 mb tops , and (get this) I am less than 50m from the exchange

Don't need anything faster really , i don't download music or films so it is plenty OK for me .....

do you think this is dependant on how much traffic is on the server??

Possibly, also depends on what else is on your machine, (if it happened to go checking emails at the sametime as the test for example)

Pitifully slow if I used the NY server:crazy:

The link below connects you to one of the online speed testers

http://resources.zdnet.co.uk/speedtest/

As a number of others have said more memory will speed up your system. It certainly did mine when I went from 512Mb to 2Gb. I strongly recommend Crucial Technology as a good memory supplier. If you access the website you can download a tester that will tell you exactly what memory is compatible with your PC.

Just used your test link.....came up with this. I'm on 10 Meg.

mines backwards.. upload way higher than download - suspect my link is being hammered by other users sucking up the internet.

As you can see, I'm in the heart of Silicon Valley right now. ( google is fast from here:) )

"My phone" line or "my area"? For your area that may have been a good indication but your line sounds like it cannot handle it. Every line, down to the it's location in the exchange to the wiring in your property to your filters to your BT point to router cable can all effect the speed.

Ensure everthing your side of the BT point is tip top. Short as possible cables, but don't worry if you need some length, just use a Cat5e RJ11 to RJ11 cable.

If you have more than one phone point in your house, eliminate them by using the engineers socket behind your faceplate. If that is better get a filtered face plate that will do the same effectivly without the need for a separate filter. Measure your SNR as you make these changes.

Having a fast line SOME of the time depending on time of the day is no use. If your line cannot support a speed at the busiest/worst time of the day then forget about that speed. You want the fastest speed that you can get all of the time to be what you are aiming for or you will get drop outs. If that is 2 meg, that is 2 meg.

If your speed fluctuates and you get drop outs (outside of your bedding in period) make your ISP get on to BT about it, there are changes that can be made to aid stability.

Having a 2MB line is a lot better than some can get!

I use BT for the reason that all ISPs have to deal with BT ADSL engineers for line realted stuff and I find it quite easy to get passed from the ISP side of BT to the line engineers.

Cheers Graham.

I do still get drop outs/disconnections at random and have to reconnect and is a pain. Probably explains why now.

You lot bragging about the size of your pipes!:D

BenzCommander, how is your modem connected, by LAN or USB?

If you are connected by USB it is possible that your USB interface could be holding things up. Going by the spec of your system it is possible that your USB interface is 1.1 and if you are using other USB devices this could be slowing it down.

Yup (I had a glass of wine you know!!( my modem is USB conected, but is the only USB device I have permenantly connected. Oh no, my printer is conected by USB, could this slow it down??

Cheers!!!
