91' 500SL - Debadged - Albrex SuperCharger
Hello All

Some people have PM'd me about my Albrex Supercharger.

Here's the story so far.

Here the link on forum about the story of buying it – along with a
link to the guy who designed / built the supercharger.

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129...ghlight=albrex

And about the dyno run's against the 600SL.

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129...ghlight=albrex

Both Stuart Kinight and I think we are getting about 85% out of my car and 90% out of his. This summer I going to have someone "breath" on the
engine…. Chasing TechTune to 500HP.

It is a well a monster in the low down range at full power. Run
Goodyear F1's 265X40X17 rear and 245X40X17 fronts. Loads rear wheel
grip and well it still spins on the lanes I drive down when pushing
the car.
Very fun…..

When we did the dyno run we didn't slacken the kick-down cables and
still got 470lbs of torque. We suspect it has over 500lbs of torque.
But I need to sort out the injector issue first. Hence I need to have
someone "breath" on the engine who knows what they are doing.
It's only running 6lbs or .4 bar of boost and it should not be running
out of fuel in 3rd at 4500rpm sustained.
When the 600sl hit is max hp it was running 5500rpm in 3rd sustained.
So either the injectors where dirty or too small or the ECU needs remapping.

So we could have more HP and Torque…

Sorry the links dont work.:(

Some conflicting opinions on Benzworld (as per usual). Just for clarification - how much did the whole thing cost and what did you do with the rest of the car (brakes / gearbox etc).

500 hp will need serious pistons, tollerances and effectively racing internals to have any form of longevity.

Otherwise your not so much building an engine than a bomb.

Hate to be a party pooper....but why not just buy a 60....?

OK

I'm off........

Just been reading through the Benz World write ups...very interesting and nice to see something new on a Benz.

Whilst I'm sure any Mercedes enthusiast would love the thought of tooling around in an SL60 the Albrex car would appear to have cost less on initial purchase, seems to have more power, would probably cost less in spares and servicing and is a car you could drive more often without fear of racking up the miles and damaging your investment. Obviously it will never have the cache of the '60, but pretty cool none the less :)

I've seen quite a few '60s but never a 'blown 500. Hats off to any one that drives their '60 as a daily though

If you could find a 60 it would have been cheaper - and better, however not really the argument.

Most tuners haven't bothered with the M119 for a reason...

Not really - both Kleeman and HPS offer superchargers for the M113 - the engine is after all supplied with a kompressor in the 55s.

Hello Chaps

The car cost me £8K and it had SC already without an intercooler.

Albrex only sells the SC now with the intercooler for 13K Euros installed.

Saw one on ebay a view months back after it sold.

Compression has been lowered and ECU remapped.
Standard gearbox.
Currently upgrading the brakes to brembo 6 or 4 pots on the front depending on what I can find.

Just thought you guys like to know.

Why someone did this back in 1991 I'm not sure.

But it puts a smile on my face and that for me is all that matters.... :)

Like to get 95% out of the cars I own - she is running about 80%.

BTW

She did 75K miles in her first 5 years.
Another 22K niles over the next 10 yeats.
Since I had her in 5k in the last 5 months.

She is my daily drive.

Currently I have 8 jobs to do - not a bad list for a 16 1/2 year old car....

When you find a '60 for 8K be sure and let me know as I would be very interested :)............and better ? but not faster :p

I'm referring to the cost of actually retrofitting a supercharger as well as buying a donor car.

This car may have been £8k but that was without the intercooler and with what looks like serious ADS issues.

The SC works fine without the intercooler well it has for the 100K miles.

ADS issues think this in known problem with the R129 and right pain to resolve.

But it doesn't take away from my enjoyment of driving the car.

Ahhh, ok I did'nt see any reference to starting from scratch in the original post........ so when you say '60 you mean '60 requiring work ? Reading between the lines that is :)

No I mean a decent SL60.

Finding an R129 with a supercharger is practically miraculous - so realistically anyone looking to upgrade would need to spend £5 - £10k. It would then make sense to sell their 500 and buy an SL60 - you're not going to lose any money on one whereas modding is a moneypit.
