97 e300td estate, alarm problem

hi all, i have recently purchased a 97 e300td estate car, shes in beautiful condition, drives fantasticly and is something i have wanted for many years, i have always had vans for my work..

now i have got this wonderful motor i want to keep it in the condition and running order it has been used to, but dont have much money to play with now i am out of work due to illness..

i have a problem with the alarm going off for no reason i can find.?
all of a sudden, out of the blue, the lights start flashing even if theres no one near her.
i can see nothing out of place, no bugs or spiders are to be seen, its a niggle, plus it dont always happen, it seems to be more around 8pm ish 'if' it goes off.
WHAT CAN IT BE?????

2nd problem, my exhaust has just severed in half, it wasnt even blowing yesterday and kwik fit have just told me that both parts are a stunning £747 fitted..
help, cant i get these cheaper

got the exhaust repaired by a mate, only temp, but will last about 6 months or so.. at least thats one thing out the way; now the alarm problem needs sorting

About the alarm it coould be a door switch faulty.

Hi,
What type of key do you have? flip out key blade type, (with red & green lights on the rear view mirror) or a 3 button electronic key, as this makes a difference to the type of alarm installed.

It's an estate so it will not have three buttons.

strangely, i do have the electronic 3 button key
