There was a time when at least some manufacturers quoted standard work time allowances for particular tasks. I'm not sure if MB ever did this. The times plus the hourly labour rate gave you a basic cost. My Indie charges a straight £50/hour plus consumables/parts. The latter items would cost at least as much from MB. His overheads are modest since he owns the premises (a one time village garage) and does not have pretty girls serving coffee and filing their nails. I don't see how the dealerships in fancy buildings can compete. Has anyone asked a dealership what their hourly labour rate is?

Now that's definitely a thought W1ghty - I had thought of dropping down to Portsmouth to MBS for the day as an alternative ! Meantime, I've had another quote: £532.96 for 'A' service, to include replacing brake fluid (at £116.49) at one of seventeen garages that are part of the MB Retail Group. As PP said above, I need to get checklists to find out precisely what is covered .... there are also the effects of Covid: courtesy car now charged at £30 (because of cleaning before/after use) & also, no option to sit & read the paper/magazines etc indoors while they do the service ....
Or they more often dont! I work in a main dealership and for example you get .1 of an hour (6 minutes) to change a front side lamp bulb on a jag xf, the air box has to come out and the headlamp needs undoing but it doesn come off the car as you cant get to the lower bolts without the bumper off but its enough to get the cover off, anyway its a 20 minute job to change and i could go on and on like this so when you do get the occasional job that takes less time its a bonus as you are always being hounded to be more efficient but everything is against you! I will also add if the customer comes in specifically for that job that also includes driving in and out of the workshop! Each operation has a time in minutes allocated to it by MB. The customers are being charged by the dealer for labour based on the official quoted time on MB's system, even if the mechanics manages to complete the work quicker than the officially allocated time (which they often do).
Wolfie, type faster, you were allowed 0.05 hours to type that post and it end up taking double that time.Or they more often dont!
