Hi,

Posted this here initially so more people can see it, sorry!

On my wife's A-Class, the A/C has stopped working. When I press the button the light comes on but does not blow out any cold air. Cannot even hear any pump being activated when I press the button on/off.
Any ideas what this could be please?

Car has just come out of warranty so would appreciate any advice to point me in the right direction before I take it to an indie.

Thanks in advance.

Am I right in thinking that when the red indicator light on the console is illuminated, the A/C is off?

On mine, if the red light is on, the compressor (A/C) is most definitely OFF.

With the red light off, eventually cool air will flow in if the temperature is set low enough in contrast to the ambient temperature outside.

I've seen something about the A/C "is it on or off" debated on here before. Looks like not all Mercs are the same. The A/C in my CLS is definitely on when the red light is illuminated.

When light is on it means A/C is on on both of my cars. All due respect I've had the car for 3 years so know when it is on or off!

But yes it is the other way around on some of the other Mercs.

With all due respect , there have been many posts on the subject where the owner didn't realise what the indicator light meant.

You probably have a leak from the condensor , not enough to trigger the EC light staying on , but enough that they system won't engage the compressor to avoid damage to it.

Good luck sorting it out . :)

ML light on means lovely ice cold air in my boat race, and a whopping single figure mpg. What posessed me to by a 4.3litre V8...?

When the EC light is illuminated in your ML , the air con is on ?

sorry to sound ignorant, cos im hopeless with most motoring subjects, but I meant when i press the A/C button, the light comes on (the button).

no dashboard lights or warnings come on. Apart from the constantly yellow 'low fuel' light......

Hmmmm ....

It must be different to my CLK 430 then , as the air con is on all the time , and only disengages when you press the EC button ( economy ) , at which point the light comes on to tell you it is OFF.

Have you got the circular rotary temperature controls or the climate control panel , this may be where the difference is ...

Does it look like this ?

AC is on in this picture , two buttons to the right of the left hand blue arrow button is the EC button , if you press this , the AC turns off and a red LED illuminates to let you know it is off.

yes mate, mine's a pre facelift. TBH, im having a bit bother at the minute. I've got warm air at the midway point and 'eye boiling' molten lava when cold? thats not right. The heating systems never been right with this car since i got it. Hots cold and vise versa.

It's not a major issue just yet as its nice weather, but come Oct ill have to get it sorted.

In a nutshell, when its working, when ive got dial to cold, it's 'warm' (due to problem) but when press A/C button is ice cold.

On my A190 (W168) lit up EC button means 'no cooling, no dehumidifying' (page 31 Interior Manual)
I should think the W169 is not radically different.

some have A/C button/switch and some have EC button/switch

With A/C button light on means ON.
With EC button light on means OFF.

On some models if the EC lights starts flashing it usually means leak or regas is required.

Personally I never touch these buttons, i just adjust temp accordingly.
