Can anyone tell me why my car started playing up yesterday after 5 years trouble free motoring. When I returned to the car after a shopping trip, the car would not unlock. I changed the batteries in the blipper but still no joy. I used the key to unlock the door and when I opened it the alarm went off. I started the engine but it stopped immediately and 'Start Error' came up on the dash.

I spoke to assist and the were talking about an ECU problem, £180 and 1 - 2 hours wait for an engineer to got to me and a multi-hundred pound bill to replace the item. No thanks.

A friend brought my spare key but still no joy. He 'Googled' the problem and one of the replies said to disconnect the battery. So I did and the alarm fell silent. I started the engine and it ran. I drove the car home 10 miles and all was well, apart from the alarm going off from time to time and the hazards flashing. I got home and tried the remote again, this time it worked. Now all is as it should be. Confused but relieved, I left it at that.

Today I have re-set the clock and re-entered the code for the stereo. All still seems to be OK. What was it that went wrong? Has this happen to anyone else? Is it likely to re-appear? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope it might be of some use to others in the same predicament. I obviously now drive with a 10mm spanner in the car, you just never know.

Perhaps a battery problem? Average lifespan for a battery nowadays is 5-10 years, depending on build type and usage.

I'd get your battery load tested first to ensure it's still behaving properly.
