Gixxer 6, Citroen Berlingo, 911 C4S, Dacia Duster and lots of bicycles.
After loads of bouncing ideas around we have decided to buy the following cars so some advice would be welcome.

Car no1 will be an e class estate preferably around 1999-2002. What should I look out for or should I avoid this model completely due to the rust and valeo issues.

Car no2 will be a Jeep Grand Cherokee from around 1996-1999. I know zilch about these so any advice would be very very welcome.

We will buy the cars probably in about December this year and then drive them back here to Skiathos.

Looking forward to your knowledgeable replies.

I'm not sure but I just read on Wikipedia that the W210 ended production in 2002, does this mean anything before that year shouldn't be affected with the rad issue?.

My personal approach if I had to buy a W210 would be to buy a cheap but well serviced one. If they're the same as W208 then the rust is mostly cosmetic, which can be DIY repaired. So as long as you aren't too proud of your car then it could make for economical motoring.

PM me about Jeep knowledge... I'm on my 5th....

Except for the front spring perches and the front cross member...check them both otherwise the rest is cosmetic.

Wasn't the Valeo problem in the 211 not the 210??

The Valeo problem did not affect the 210 series.
Television (Malcolm) on the other Forum advised me.
According to the dates stamped on things like ashtrays in my 210 it was manufactured in October 2002 and it was registered in UK in Jan 2003.
Hope this helps.
Happy Motoring.

John

Is it just me, or is it not a bit strange to decide to buy a car you know nothing about? I would seek advice first, and then decide!

Darrell, Wasnt there a restriction on Skiathos regarding age of vehicles you can import? An aquaintance had to bring a UK reg'd 93 Polo back a few years ago? Im sure you've looked into this by the way - just interested.

Thats very true , but I have narrowed down the field of 4X4's and decided that the way forward is a Grand Cherokee.

I like the fact that they are relatively cheap, have a large engine and a lot of toys. My brother-in-law used to sell them and sings their praises and there are a couple of guys on this forum who have only good things to say about them.

I don't think it's strange to decide on a particular car without knowing the ups and downs of it.

Thats why I asked.

Greece as a whole has got many strange rules and regs regarding bringing in non-Greek plated cars, most of them contravene most EU laws, but hey, this is Greece.

You just live with it, however, as in most things in life there are ways around this. ;);)

A friend has a Jeep Grand Cherokee and loves it apart from the need to be followed by an oil tanker.

If you need a driver just say :D :bannana:
