My son lives in Plymouth and has, supposedly, a 50Mb connection.

It is utterly hopeless: 1mb download at 2.00am and 350kb upload. And he is not alone:

Broadband in the Evenings, Plymouth PL4 (Area Ref... - Help & Support Forum

They have oversold and kit cannot support traffic although a fix is promised. Sometime.

What can be done? They are ignoring all complaints, requests for rebates, discounts etc. OFCOM say that until 3 months have elapsed or you have been told to clear off you cannot even start an "Alternative Dispute Resolution" process.

Only when that has finished not to your satisfaction would OFCOM even consider even doing something!

They currently have BT working on a fix for them as they can't do it themselves. I'm actually not aware of anybody that does actually get 50 mbps line speed. Biggest con going and will shorly be beaten anyway by BT's new service which delivers over 100 mbps.

I was just considering switching from BT to Virgin Media.... to 20mbps - I don't need 50.. but even so...

Im on Virgin near Portsmouth. This is my normal test results:

Out in the sticks of North Wilts miles away from anything

So 1mb is something we dream of...thing that confuses me is the upload is faster than the download......weird

I was trying to troubleshoot my fathers BT adsl connection in Devon and at certain times of the day he was only able to get 0.09mb/s (little better than dialup).

A call to BT resulted in speaking to a chap called Boris in Mumbai which unsurprisingly was a total waste of time. :o

Something not right there. I'd contact your service provider and query that.

I would make regular speed tests, keep records for a few weeks then cancel your direct debit. Let them take you to court and try and explain why they are not providing the service you are paying for!

This sort of thing really gets up my nose. Nothing more than mis-selling.

Have you contacted trading standards?

I've had many gripes and issues with Virgin in the past... the instant another provide can offer more than 20megs to my hours I'm switching... (I live too far from an exchange to use ADSL2 - get about 512kb on that!)

Anyhow, in the past I've found Virgin VERY responsive the instant you complain to the ISPA. ISPA - Complaints Procedure

Fill out the online form, and I'm willing to wager someone from Virgin's customer support will call you the day after (oh, and someone in the UK, not a call center in India... not that I have anything against Indians, being half-Indian myself!)

Not sure I understand the BT connection as Virgin should be cable, not using the phone line (ADSL = BT). Or did I miss something?

I used to live near Malmesbury & 1/2 meg was the max we could get, Pipex even used a discontinued business package for us so we could get a static IP with those slow speeds!

All cable services provided by any operator are all routed back through BT's exchanges, you are correct Virgin is fibre optic but they are all routed back through BT exchanges as BT are the only company with a network infrastructure for the UK. BT currently have 2 projects running for Internet access a WiFi Cloud that they are testing with great results and connection speeds and as I mentioned Broadband speeds in excess of 100 mbps coming soon. BT Adastral Park are the World Leaders in data over copper and fibre and that is why Virgin have asked them to look at the low line speed problems they are experiencing.

Just to show that it wasn't a 'One-Off'. And I reckon quite a busy time of the day...

I'm very happy with Virgin, :bannana: just as I was with NTL, and Cable & Wireless!
