Last Weekend a friend got married and asked me If I'd use my car to help with the driving for his wedding. So I did. However 1 car was not enough and not wanting to shell out on vintage car hire the two other fellas had to go out and hire cars for the day.

We got a 58 plate 520d SE and a 09 plate Passat 2.0Tdi.

I was very impressed with the passat, more refined than the MB engine wise, classy interior, good space and comfort. Quite why someone would buy a Saab 93/95, Mondeo, Insignia when they could get a car like that beats me. It was substantially more economical than the BMW and the E class over the same run and was a really impressive car. Anyone in the market for a family saloon should definately have a look.

The 520d on the other hand was not as impressive. The engine was more refined and the gearbox (latest ZF 6sp auto) a very good combo but it was slower than my E class. Mainly I suspect as mine has 50k on it, the 5 less than 10k. It was an SE and handling very un BMW like as when we took it for a blast and I followed in the E it was wallowing about and I wasn't having to try as much to keep up. Comfort wise it wasn't as good as the AG E class and interior was cheap and plasticy. BWM really need to do better next time. I couldn't also see the point of the electronic gear selector and the latest iDrive is very poor, no need if the car has no nav and the more old fashioned buttons of the VW and MB are easier and safer.

10 years ago I'd never have thought I'd say I'd probably have a Passat over a BMW and how 95% of the time the passat is almost as good as an E class but thats either the mass cars playing catch up, or the premium car makers not moving the game on enough.

The next day we decided to take the BMW and MB for a road trip over to Torridon and then down to Inverrgary where my mate split and went up the Great Glen and me back home. On the twist roads over from Kinlochewe and through Loch Carran the MB left the BMW for dead and even on the more open A87 the BMW was no where to be seen.

Nice pictures, I'm sure it's the first time I've seen you're Mercedes clean!

Its a hire car! dont worry about fuel ecconomy you should be seeing how fast it goes backwards and how fast you can burn the tyres up!!

Have the hire company noticed the scratches on the boot yet?

Dunno not my credit card thats being billed. They'll notice the additional 1k miles on it though :D

Alas we had the Passat for 24hrs to transport brides maids, no fun was to be had. The drive home from the wedding was so wet that any fun probably would have put it in a field and a £500 excess bill to foot.

They also have a 4 wheel drive R36 (3.6L V6) version, for those needing more oomph :)

Tidy motor, spied one not that long ago. The sleeper in the range is the 2litre turbo one with the GTi golf engine in it. It will be a haldex 4x4 so predominately a FWD car that can send drive to the rear, not a proper fixed full time 4x4 like A4 Audi, RS4, Scooby and evo type cars. It will feel front driven. If these were RWD like cars should be the Passat would probably be on the drive now.

Not so sure....;)

Agreed. A 4x4 haldex with a DSG auto box really would be the consummate all rounder in my books.

Also if the badge doesn't concern, then Skoda vrs variants give superb value for money.

It's amazing how many quality cars there are available these days.

I was surprised to hear about the BMW. I've never been in one myself, blessed or lucky ;) Do you think it would improve with sports suspension and the 3.0 diesel engine?

Ah the VRs quite why anyone would buy a golf when they could get that. Terrific value for money, classy and roomy too but the honey in the Skoda range is the Superb TDi with DSG. My only gripe is a RWD motor would be more fun, but for the money nowt can touch it.

It wouldn't improve, it would be transformed into a decent motor but other gripes like iDrive, naff pastics would remain.

Following it was amusing watching it roll and wallow about and my mate work the living day lights out of it whilst keeping up with no effort in the "old mans car". Nearly rear ending it because of its lesser roll holding not so funny but put into prespective just how much tidier the AG 211 is.
