I recently bought a 2015 A180 and when I tried to go out one night it turned out that the main-beam light would continue to stay on whether I put the lights on auto or low/normal beam and I am not able to dip/turn off the main-beam lights.

I went to a mechanic and he told me I had to replace the entire steering column switch module for about $1000 plus labor and plus $200 to program the steering column module switch, but the guy seemed a bit suspicious and no other mechanic knew what the problem was. I'm also taking the car for a recall regarding the steering column module this week to replace two bits, but apparently nether of the bits should affect the high beam lights.

Just if anyone has had this issue happen to them or if anyone knows how to fix the issue?

The switch can fail, rarely the SAM can fail. If he plugged in Xentry Diagnosis he would have been able to read what the car thinks the switch is showing, i.e know whether its the switch or not.

The replaceable part is the whole steering column switch module (as he says) which is about £500 in UK from memory. And yes, the new module needs installing (don't forget the safety seal on the connector) and Initial Startup (to bring software up to the latest and configure it). MB dealers don't like doing recall work when there are faults, they may want to fix it (and in fact, it should save you some £ if they do it at the same time. It *may* be that the recall replaces the switch pack though ...

Ok thanks, I'll take this into consideration and see what happens in a couple days after I take in the car for the recall.

Just a thought but have seen it happen.
headlamp bulb filament blown and touching the other one and joining them together.
