trying to get my Audio20 unit out of my 2006 CLK but I'm getting stuck..

There are lots of YouTube clips and forum advice on how to do it, so I know I must be doing something wrong!
The part I'm having an issue with is the ashtray removal. the instructions and videos show "Release the two clips with a flat screwdriver" and they do something very quick on the two brackets at the front of the ashtray.. but what do they do? I spent ages digging around the clips but I can't see how to release them at all :-(

Any advice? Like "you must slide the clip to the left while stood on one leg at midnight"? ;-) I don't want to go breaking any clips!

thanks in advance!

The 2 clips are hooks that go down-wards (so are not obviously clips). You push them toward the back of the car with a small screwdriver acting as a lever in the side whilst gently pulling ashtray up, and actually when you release one the ashtray tends to come out. They only move above 1-2mm

Right! Got it all apart! (yay!) Took some doing though, but once I'd figured it all out, it was straight forward enough.

The aim of this extractions was to see if my audio 20 had the fibre connections - I didn't fancy bypassing amps etc..
But,
it seems to have two facra (spelling?) aerial connectors - I'm guessing one is in the rear screen, but the other one?
do you think that both aerials would be powered / amplified? (I'm thinking of one the FM / Dab converters that dab on wheels do..?)

The end game is to put in a double-din DAB unit, such as the JVC KW-DB60AT, or funds allow, the Pioneer AVH-X3500DAB
(recommendations welcome!)

Complete!

I have fitted a JVC KW-DB60AT Double Din Car Stereo with Built in DAB Tuner into my 2006 CLK.

I also bought a fitting kit which included the facia adaptor, wiring harness, aerial adaptor and can-bus adaptor.

I removed the centre console (lots of instructions on YouTube)
Removed the old head unit.

Fibre-optics
My car has a phone kit fitted into the arm-rest, but as I don't have a sony Ericsson K750  I was never going to use it anyway - Buy a head-unit with BlueTooth if you want telephone connectivity.
So the fibre was left in the connection block as-is.
I DO NOT have a factory fitted amp or CD changer.

Can-bus
This is needed for two things: steering-wheel controls and ignition-on (The mercedes loom doesn't have the ignition/accessory feed)

DAB aerial
fitted to the top, passenger-side of the screen, the cable ran down the A pillar, under the carpet in the footwell and through to the back of the centre console. (No holes drilled)

Wires cut / tapped into
can-bus high & low behind the locking connector
permanent +, ignition + and ground (in the harness adaptor)

Aerial connector
My CLK has two aerial connectors (no, I don't know why) they are colour-coded - purple & yellow. I used the fakra - DIN adaptor and used the purple feed.

Once everything was connected up, I gave it a test
Sound quality was MUCH better than the Audio20 unit - clearer, better dynamic range and louder.
MP3 from the USB stick, reads TAG info, track +/- & folder up/down
DAB - I live in a narrow, steep-sided valley, but it picked up the main BBC stations ok - I drove to the other side of town and it picked up all the others (and some I'd never heard of!)
FM - sounds great, no hiss.
CD - no idea, not used it yet! Doubt I ever will!
Steering-wheel controls - volume up/down works but track up/down only works when the dash display is on "audio" - you don't get any information displayed on screen of course.

I'm chuffed with myself for getting it all in and working, all the connections seem a bit daunting when I started - but i followed the instructions and it was straight forward enough :D

Looks smart.

I think that's normal isn't it? It is with my Audio20.

Ahh, you're probably right! I hadn't noticed. :-D

Just filling up a 32Gb micro USB stick with music - should last the trip to Paris this week :-)
