So the A35 has been into the dealership today for its first service, when I got home I looked at the ESS printout in more detail and noted that the oil type shown is MB 229.51. I looked at the AMG supplement that came with the general handbook and the oil specification shown there is 229.71. I've downloaded PDF sheet MB 223.2 (from Mercedes-Benz Operating Fluids ) which shows the approved oil specs for all current Mercedes engines. There is an entry (M260 A) that specifies MB 229.51 is not approved for Western Europe for the M260 engine (229.71 is which correlates with the AMG supplement), but it IS approved worldwide (except Western Europe). However, what is further confusing is that there is another entry 'M 256.9 except hybride, M 260, M 264, M 282.9' which shows specification MB 229.51 as approved. Therefore I'm at a loss as to whether my car has the right spec oil in it as I don't know what the difference is between engines M260 and M260 A. Obviously I will try and query this with my dealer but I thought I'd ask in case there is someone more knowledgeable than I regarding this.

Just a quick note: historically, when oil spec was limited to certain parts of the world and not approved in others, it was down to the make-up of the fuel.

So it's possible that the reason for the restriction is that West Europe has E5 and E10 petrol, but this is just a theory.

Thanks markjay, the oil spec sheet from Mercedes is a little confusing and I'm still not sure whether MB 229.51 is approved for the m260 engine. I'll drop an email over to the service advisor and ask the question.

Hi , From my understanding Mercedes Benz recommend engine oil changes once a year or every 15000 miles when used in the UK.

In Canada the recommend oil changes are between 6000 and 10000 km for Mercedes passenger cars.

I do understand that fuel quality and external temperatures etc etc can reduce service intervals.

My car is serviced annually but I only travel on average 4000 miles per year.

The long service intervals really worry me !
