C180 Elegance
When I introduced myself I spoke briefly about my recent purchase.

It's a C180 elegance.2012

It is a peach of a car with app 46k on the clock.

Looking at trying to avoid the issues I read about here and W1ghty posted some yseful advice here. I would like to ask a few questions please

"My 2009 CLK has nearly 90k on it (same engine I think ) , so stop worrying and enjoy .
Make sure gearbox service is done every 40k miles by an MB specialist .
Is it the M271 engine ? If it is the regular engine oil and filter changes is a must . Also fit the wire blockers to the cam magnets on the front of the engine if it is the M271 .
Some of the earlier than yours C class platforms have rear subframe rust issues , get a garage (or you) to spray a rust preventing treatment (I use Dinitrol) inside the subframe through its drain holes .
Spray something like ACF50 on to the rear brake pipes , and take off the lower body panels under the car and clean up and treat the brake pipes that run the length of the car , a lot of dirt gets trapped and hidden by the panels .
Spray lube into all the door key locks and use the metal key to jiggle them every year to keep them working .
Then relax and enjoy"

1 Can someone please shed more light on the wire blockers on the cam magnets please?

2 Lower body panels, I assume these are plastic and are held in place by plastic screws?

3 I also have a Land Rover Discovery 2. These are known for corrosion aroundd the rear chassis area. I used rust converting primer and chassis all in one paint from Buzzweld. I also used a lance on the end of a paint sprayer and spayed zero prep inside the chassis. There is also the option of waxing inside too. This has held up well for a number, ber of years.

Has anyone been happy with this approach on the subframes?

4 Is there a good free online manual for these cars available? Land Roverx have RAVE, which is a freely available pc based workshop manual.

Thanks

The first question is if your car has the newer M274 engine, or the older M271 engine? The newer M274 engine was introduced in mid-2012.

Not sure. It was registered June 2012. So I will need the engine number.

The V5 has gone off so I will need the new one unless there is another way I can find out

Run the VIN in a free VIN decoder. Or just post here the first part (e.g. WDD2040312A.......). It will be on a sticker at the base of the windscreen on the passenger side (viewed from outside the car).

I thought the engine number was on the V5?

Or....

The engine number is also showing on the Datacard, which is available via a free online VIN decoder.

Wire Blockers on the M271 engine , bits with green on . They stop oil leaking from the cam magnets going anywhere

The lower panels are plastic held on by metal and or plastic screws .
Subframes , who knows , it makes me feel better for a few quids worth of spray .
Give the wheel arches a good clean inside on the lip as well , where the dirt sits

You are correct , sorry , the engine type (271) is the first 3 letters of the engine number . Which is on the VIN plate in the engine bay ??
Lol.. My engine type isn't in my Vin# either
I have an (M)157. My Vin# is
WDD2120742B001331.

The engine model number can be interred from the VIN.

E.g., WDD2040312Axxxxxx is M274 1.6L CGI BlueEfficiency.

You just need to Google it.
