Aftermarket Comand

I would strongly advise against buying any head unit with Windows CE operating system, particularly anything attempting to imitate a proper GPS: you'll spend most of your time re-setting your SatNav.

Even without GPS, there are limitations and inconvenient 'features': e.g. it takes a good few seconds to access music on SD when you turn the ignition on; file names are truncated to 8.3 standard (think 1990th) which makes it practically impossible to read (MOZA~013.MP3 is a far cry from original file name - Mozart Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Serenade In G Major.mp3)

I bought mine [cheapo] double-DIN head unit as a temp solution for a temp car, and it was only a quarter of the price of the one you're considering, so all in all it was a good deal and a reasonable option under circumstances, but it certainly no COMAND nor it is a Pioneer, JVC or Kenwood (which would be my next one, as they now feature Garmin interface for SatNav, and it is the best one out there IMO).

Thanks for the thread tip - I didn't spot yours cos I searched on Android. I wouldn't buy CE.

Most of the dynavin vendors on ebay will give a choice of CE or Android, and will also do installation.

A good ebay search is: DYNAVIN MERCEDES

Some of the Vendors suggest using CE because the Android Satnav is less good. What they mean is google maps depends on a telephone signal, but there are many stand-alone android navigation programs too, and one of the ebay vendors (ttints) supplies one as well as a 3G dongle.

If I get one, I guess my comand will be up for grabs. I think it is 2.5 and will check soon to see if it has the video input. I hope I don't have the fibre optic amps.

As others have said , steer well clear, was looking into one before i bought my Comand, then saw all the bad press and negative comments so decided against it .

Thats a very good price.. I paid nearly twice that amount for mine (Though it was only 6 weeks old)..
In can totally recommend the NTG 2.5.. Its a cracking unit..

Excuse my ignorance, not been around for quite a while. But this NTG unit? is that a genuine Mercedes part? or a third party? As I may be in the market for one to fit a W211 04.

Ta Much

Genuine.

I know Duncs has got a complete system for an o4 car up for sale as he has just sold his car.

He has the unit, all wiring, even has TV tuner, DAB tuner etc. as well.

OoooOoo

Interested in that, did he run an add then? I shall go off and check. In the end I purchased a 2003 model, lower mileage and better condition.

Regards Paul

I reckon THIS seller may c0ck it up. Look at the picture below.

Maybe it's just a big cover up. ;)

Without wishing to upset anyone, but has anyone actually have one of these fitted? The Dynavin? It seems to me that I have little choice as the NTG2.5 appears to be for 2005 onwards, and mine is a 2003 W211.
Cost for me is key, and I seem to remember it was serious money to get the original type comand fitted.

The Dynavin is a bit pants imho.

I have seen a few in BMWs and they feel Chinese with the interface, the newer Android version better, but I wouldn't want to own one after seeing it.

As I said, Duncs has an NTG2.5 he is about to sell with all the wiring you need for your 2003 car.
Maybe get in touch with him and ask him what he wants for it?
PM me if you want his contact details.

NTG2.5 will fit any W211. Simplest upgrade is straight from Audio 20 cd to Comand NTG2.5. If your current headunit is any other than Audio 20 cd the install is a little more complicated and requires additional wiring looms. Plenty of info about it on www.mercupgrades.com

Thanks for that information, not sure what the model is in mine, it looks like a cut down satnav and radio? tiny screen like just the radio? Will go check the site out.

Could you let me have his details (or even forum username) as having spoken with Mark today at Comand Europe I'm interested in this.

Thanks
Ian
