Hi guys, just had quote to get my aircon compressor replaced on my 12 years old C200. Comes at 700£ all included, 3 hours labour.
Does that sound ok / cheap / expensive in your experience? Much appreciated!

Hello and welcome . As long as you are 100% sure that it is the compressor that is at fault - quite rare due to it's 'squash plate' design - and they are going to do a full all round proper job with a new pump and cabin filter (and they know what they are doing) £250/£300 of that will be labour so if it's including VAT sounds fair.

Thanks a lot, yest it's VAT included. Recently there was a squealing noise when revving the engine above 4000 rpm with the air con (no noise with the AC off), now the noise is gone, so I assume that what was dying ultimately died, maybe the compressor clutch?

They may be replacing the condenser & receiver / drier as well as flushing the system through, as bits of the compressor will probably be spread around the system.

Have you had the system pressure tested? If there's a leak (e.g. a hole in the condenser) you'll need to get that fixed first as the refrigerant carries the lubricant for the compressor. You may find all is OK once the system is recharged and holding pressure ... that was the case with our Vito anyway (which had a similar noise from the compressor with a/c on). Depends how long you ran it like that for I guess!

Your compressor does not have a clutch it runs all of the time the engine is running. A bit like this.

I would be checking Bar pressure with I carsoft firs if that's about 5.5bar, then the belt, alternator and pulley set up, the squealing usually happens from issues with pulley being jammed or loose, tensioner knakered or overrun pulley on alternator

Im assuming the noise is a belt, iv had this before, regassed system, got worst, sorted belt and or tension issue gone
