Anyone have a recommendation for recharging / fault diagnostics for air conditioning 98 C250 CDI ?

Thanks

A few things to check,

1. Does the compressor turn when you switch from EC to aircon? ( Looking from the front of the car, the compressor is to the lower right of the engine and driven by the poly belt. When in EC mode the pulley spins on a free wheeling clutch, when you switch EC off, have an assistant do this while you look at the compressor, you should see the solenoid clutch engage and the outer part of the compressor pulley should spin up.)

2. If the compressor does not kick in it's likely the refrigerant level is low due to a leak, the compressor requires a minimum level of "gas pressure" before it will kick in. A working aircon system in a MB runs at about 300psi.

3. Does the aircon blow cool air or just smelly warm air? Again low refrigerant due to leak and/or pollen filter needs changing.

4. If your aircon control unit looks like this:-

you can run diagnostics from the controller, for a full run down and some light bedtime reading take alook at this:- http://www.continentalimports.com/ser_ic40142.html

With all that said, most likely cause of a leak will be the condensor, leaves and road muck are forced in through the grill and gather at the bottom of the condensor, over time this will cause, or certainly contribute, to a leak. The other cause could be leaky unions/pipes or the compressor itself.

There's lots of mobile guys around who can diagnose faulty aircon ok, I used AIRMEDIC, it's a national concern with local francise guys. The chap I used based in Swansea was very good.

Alternatively, find a local independant MB specialist to take a look, although they'll probably call on a francised aircon specialist mentioned earlier.
