Hi all, the air con appears no longer to work on my CLK. I assume its activated by turning the thumbwheel to the fully cold position and switching off the EC switch. Is this something that needs regular servicing, ie a recharge? I have seen some DIY kits on line in which case where do I attach it to? The tyre valve near the radiator perhaps? Or are these air con systems prone to other failures that need more special attention. Any ideas appreciated.

Check the air-con temperature sensor at the bottom of the condenser.
It is in an oblong aluminium block with two pipes going into it. It is under the radiator at the front.
This has a tendency to fail/rot and stop the compressor cutting in.
Getting the car onto Star will be able to diagnose a problem.
If you need a picture just let me know.

Thanks, I will take a look during the week, saying that, I have a local mobile aircon specialist that does a full check up including pressure test and recharge for a reasonable sum. I will mention what you said, it may point us in the right direction.

PS, what is Star and how do we go on it? Is it part of the multifunction display?

STAR is the Mercedes Benz diagnostic computer. Any MB dealer or MB specialist will have one. Please be aware that here will usually be a charge for the fault diagnostic service.

The outcome after a proper inspection by a mobile engineer turned out to be a leaky condenser. This was confirmed by a pressure test which showed a drop and by a "sniffer" which detected the leaking gas. Greasy deposits in the front also indicate this. So looks like I will be on the look out for a second hand condenser if anybody is getting rid of any.
