Hi,
Does anyone know whether it is possible to get the catalyser air pump rebuilt in the UK?
Pump is fine, but the pulley bearing/clutch is rattling.
thanks

I've found a firm in the US who rebuild them for $225 and will ship it to the UK for $79 (about £130 total) but it seems an awfully long way to ship it.
Merc dealer quoted £800 - but I think I'd better check with another dealer.

They all do it on and off. It only runs for about 30 seconds so shouldn't really be a problem.

Thanks for replying, but it isn't the pump itself - it's the bearing in the thermo-clutch that's worn and rattling.
When the car first starts from cold the pump turns and blows air to the catalyser as normal, then as the engine warms up the pump stops as normal.
The problem is that the pulley on the front of the air pump turns all the time that the engine is running (it's in line with the fan belt so it should do this) and it is the bearing in the pulley that is rattling.
Unfortunately I can't buy just the front bearing and pulley - they only seem to come as a complete unit but I was hoping somebody reconditions them in the UK?
cheers

If you can remove the pulley take it to a bearing stockist. They will supply a new bearing and may even fit it for you. Cost will be a few pounds.

Fair comment and it's what I'd normally try to do........unfortunately, my 'other' car is in bits in the workshop and living in a remote area, I have to keep at least one car running.
(Still, I can't really blame the 'other' car - it's 40-odd years since it's last suspension rebuild!).

Get it sorted as soon as possible...

We had this rattle on the SL, and a few weeks after it started, the bearing started to break up and finally seized, making the car unusable.

Thanks DolphiN Tech, I changed the pump just in time!

As I drove the car into my workshop to change the pump the bearing collapsed and the pulley jammed. Luckily I was able to switch off before any serious damage was done; but I certainly concur, when the smog pump starts rattling - get it changed asap.

I finally found a firm in America who recondition the smog pumps (DynaTech Corporation) cost was 150$ (about £80), but with postage (79$), UK import duties (£22) and because I didn't send the old unit back to them (75$), the total ended up at about £190 which is still way cheaper than a new one from the dealer and even about half the price that Dronsfield wanted for a 2nd hand one. :) It's guaranteed for 12-months - but obviously wouldn't be economic to return it anyway, so fingers crossed it behaves.

Lucky timing! Ours let go halfway down the M4, in the outside lane...
