I have an E250 Diesel, engine 605.911 multivalve.

My fan belt is vibrating excessively. I have replaced the tensioning spring and damper and pulley but the belt is still vibrating.

I've heard a lot said about the freewheel pulleys but i don't think mine is fitted with one.

Does anybody know much about these? Were they retro fitted to stop vibration issues?

If anybody has any idea or comments then please let me know.

Cheers.

The cars below are listed as having the free wheel pulley, the info is as accurate as possible from MB, but it has caused disputes

engine 613 in the 220, 628 in the 220.
628 in the 463
628 in the 163
646 in the 211
646 in the 463
647 in the 463
648 in the 211

Yeah, i saw a few disputes while looking through the posts, lol.

My car doesn't have the free wheel fitted but i think it was retro fitted in some cases

will this stop the vibration of the belt?

Disputes? Some people even said there was no such thing. LOL

I dont think that they were fitted to stop belt vibration. How are you engine mounts? Have heard it said that poor mounts can cause early failure of the vibration damper.

i've replaced the vibration damper because i thought that was the problem as there was oil leaking from it. The belt still vibrates though.

I have a copy of the workshop software and that mentions retrofitment of the freewheel pulley but i was hoping someone on here would know about it.

This free wheel was introduced on the diesel cars, it is only when the free wheel pulley becomes defective that the viabrations start.

If you have a fixed pulley, this will not solve your problem, though you can fit it if you wish

If the vibration only starts when the freewheel pulley becomes effective ie when it seizes up then surely in this state it acts like a fixed pulley. Therefore if i replace my fixed pulley with a freewheel pulley this should stop the viration???

I do not think that it works that way

I would take a stab at the harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley). The rubber insert degraded and sets up an imbalance. Symptoms are a vibrating fan belt and engine.

Now that you mention that, i have noticed that occasionally the engine does vibrate when sat at traffic lights, not all the time though. The vibrations only ever occur at idle though.

The belt is under more tension the faster it runs, taking out the slack so to speak. On tickover it will vibrate, on acceleration it won't do it as much.

Ok Ian,

I'll try have a look and see if i can see any obvious damage to the crank pulley then.

And i'll try and get a price for a second hand pulley i suppose

Please don't use a second hand one. You have no idea what condition it is in when you fit it. It may be ok but on the other hand it may go 20 mins after you fit it.
