Hi All,

I have a problem with my 2000 e220 cdi.

Just lately it has rough idling on startup, bit of a rattle along with the belt jumping about.

Also when the car is standing still and i apply full lock to the road wheels there is a high pitched clicking type noise and you can see the (power steering?)(top right as you look at front of engine)pulley at the front is making this noise as it is resisting being turned.

Does this sound like the alternator pulley mechanism seized?

Anyone had a similar problem to this, with a price range to get fixed?

I live in the suffolk area if anyone knows of a competant repairer other than the stealer.

Cheers!

Yes these free wheel pulleys do give problems and are quite straight forward to change

Have you looked int the Indies section on the main page for someone in Sufffolk

Some pulleys can't be remove and some can. Ring your nearest dealer to find out.

They need a special too to be removed.

I had to replace my pulley 2 years ago. The symptoms were not like yours though - i had occaisional clicking sunds.

I needed a 'special tool' which is a splined socket with hole in the middle to also take a hex key - needed to unlock the pulley bolt - typical M.B!!!

This little socket costs me around £60, plus the pulley £150 approx' but still worked our cheaper for me to do rather than the dealer.

THIS IS FOR e320CDi mind - yours may be completely differant.

There is only the one type of free wheel pulley if fitted,, the MB list is not very accurate in the list of cars that use this pulley
