Am I being unreasonable?

Hi I do all the usual weekly checks but wouldn't have found the inner edge wear(you would need a ramp to check for that)

Exactly what i was saying about your car, if it didnt need to go on a ramp if wouldnt have gone on a ramp
 
When I buy a 2nd hand car of any price I take nothing on face value. I'm on the floor looking under, pulling on suspension rods, poking the exhaust etc.

I would do this for a 100 quid shed or a shiny manufacturer approved.

It was on the ramp for it's health check though.

I get what you are saying but the aproved used warranty is supposed to guard against any problems and be peace of mind.
 
3 or 4mm is the min spec for approved used

I see what you mean now, I was thinking perhaps something to be spotted on full lock when looking. I’d be slightly peeved myself. On a service they like to send a flashy video of the health check I know that

Yes the same video you mention at service is what I got for the recent healthcheck and although I do the full lock on the fronts to reveal the inside edges it's impossible for the rears without a ramp.

[SOLVED] - Rear tyre wear on A209

May be worth a read.
In my last comment I mean offset (larger rears than front) rather than asymetrical.
Thanks Ted-my rears are also wider than the fronts and we're out when checked/rectified today,they we're Bridgestones that we're replaced with Pirellis.

Still though 900 miles, thats almost 1/12 of your tyres lifespan, it kinda just looks like your trying to get something for nothing and if something in the future comes up this will be on your file

Perhaps if u drive like a loon all day long , but if I only got 12000 miles out of a set of tyres alarm bells would b ringing .

I’m disappointed if I get less than 30000 out of a set .
 
My work does a “free health check” if your car does not need to go on a ramp it wont, i get .30 of an hour (18 mins) to perform this including putting all the info on the computer, topping up your screenwash + a few other checks, make a short video and send to the customer, we are payed a time bonus, and time less than .30 we make money anything longer money gets taken off us! It will be a very quick check and if its right at the edge it wont have been noticed, but you have done 4000 miles, i dont really understand what you want the dealer to do! :dk:
An 18 minute health check including video and paperwork is a waste of time so why do dealers bother.

Because an 18 minutes free health check gets the customers into the dealership.

And if they find faults, then the owner might book the car in for further repairs.

If done honestly, then it's a win-win, because most owners would be grateful that the faults were spotted (and repaired) in time.

Sounds like typical run flat wear, they all go on the inside edge first. But I didn't think E Classes have run flats?

Also, I would not want to mix different tyres front and rear on a RWD car, not with winter coming up. Keep an eye on your traction light and any lose feeling in the handling, and match the fronts up if it doesn't feel as planted.

But my guess is run flats, seen hundreds of run flats with cords showing on the inside edges, swap to real tyres without touching geometry and no more problems, nice even wear.

Thanks for your thoughts-rears were non run flat bridgestones(265's),fronts also bridgestone(245's) and geometry was out and corrected(2 out of 4) will change fronts for pirellis to match rears if I notice what you mentioned but they're on 5mm at the moment so will monitor.

Do you know the load rating on those rears?

The geo would have to be seriously out to do that, I wonder if Mercedes are using a tyre that has too firm a sidewall for the car? That combined with a slight shift in geo could see it down to the cords.

Annoying though, and I agree, should have been spotted.
If you do a health check for customers I would think a thorough check of brakes and tyres are the bits they should be concentrating on. Walking round the outside of the car with a video camera tells me bugger all.
Not checking tyres properly gives a false sense of security, it is dangerous.

I think this is completely unrealistic advice for modern day tyres and cars. You have a great fleet of cars Pontoneer, but none of them will have the ridiculous rubber band profile tyres most modern cars have. Nor will they have the crazy geometry manufacturers fit to make their cars "feel sporty" whilst burdening them with massively oversized (and often runflat) tyres.

OP - I understand you are miffed the health care didn't pick this up. It's possible 900 miles ago the cords weren't showing, but even so the tyres would have been very low. Whether it's worth the time and hassle kicking up a fuss with the dealer, only you will know.
 
I was due an MoT test so I had the 'free health check' two days before, all ok. The MoT found a 1" cut on the inner edge of my offside front tyre, which had to be replaced at main dealer prices to pass the test, now its possible the damage occured between the check and the test, but unlikely, wasn't impressed
