I am thinking of investing in a few personal registration numbers from the DVLA. They are not personal to me: their meaning can be understood by anyone and are humorous. One is specifically for my E-Class.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you what they are as I haven't bought them yet! My question is rather: is this wise? I know that there are people out there who just buy and sell registration numbers, and they know what sells and what doesn't. The ones I am looking to buy haven't been snapped up yet, so either I am smarter than them (unlikely) or I'm wasting my money.

Am I mad?

could be many reasons...

thats always a question i find amusing because you could look at any opportunity like that.

Sometimes a customer will say to me, it looks really good, why hasnt it gone yet! the other day someone called and wanted to buy a BMW i have in.. I gave him an in depth description and he refused in the end.. his reason - it was too good to be true, someone else should have bought it already!! i explained the car was set at an attractive price to sell it quickly, i dont do BMW's!

Worked well for me as someone rang up yesterday and paid full price for it over the phone..

So you may have just come across something that no one else has cottoned on to..

or you may just have a deluded sense of humour ;)

Are you mad??

Bit of a Catch 22 question really, but if you think your sane then perhaps you have a problem.

Buy the plate if you like it, but plates tend to have a high mark-up in the hope that someone somewhere will buy it.

The DVLA is the cheapest place to buy.

John

If you like them buy them,

I have far too many, some on retention and some on other peoples cars. I just like them :)

I don't buy them for profit but if you choice something good then they do tend to go up :)

I'm thinking of buying some more as the price has just come down for some...

One of them is for our daughter who is 15 months old so NO your not mad...

The one for my E-Class is going on my car. The others are purely for investment, although they are quite amusing and would suit the egotistical loadsamoney types.

I guess they would sell eventually, although I know it can take a few years to find a buyer. (And I would have to pay a big whack in commission.)

I speculated on one a while back - only one I've ever sold.

Advertised on ebay several times, started high, and tested the market.

I forget how many times I advertised, and eventually it sold literally a few minutes after I posted it for the last time. After midnight IIRC.

Doubled my money (less ebay fees). Good fun, but I wouldn't suggest it if you're hoping to turn around the sale quickly.

Agree its not a quick sale thing...

and you do have to wait for the right buyer which takes time.

Good though and they DO tend to go up in price...

Someone I know bought M15 NOB because he was told by Noble the next model would be called an M15 and he planned to buy one.

He was really worried for a while as Noble changed there mind on the model name. However it looks like it may have been a good investment at £250 afterall. However he now has a GT3.

However would you drive a car with N O B on the numberplate....

or you may just have a deluded sense of humour ;)

Yes, that must be it! During a sane moment, I concluded that part of me must be deluded. However, it may be fun, so I'm going to get them.:)

I will let everyone know what they are when I have them!
