Anyone know what these two holes are for ? They're in the middle of the piccy and threaded. I don't think anything's missing from the car, are they for lifting the engine out ?

Cheers

Can't be holes for lifting eyes I would't have thought, surely they'd be mounted to the engine block instead?

Well looking on here:

It looks as though they are for lifting the S/C and inlet manifold. You can see the lifting eyes for the engine block in the picture as well :)

......wish mine looked that shiney ......the alloy on the top seems to tarnish on all the cars I've seen ......

Use some aluminium cleaner on it then wash down with wax.

yes, they are for lifting the engine, oh yes they are.

i had to lift one up a little bit a few weeks ago to change a compressor pulley. i was directed by wis to loosen engine mounts, connect lifting bracket, lift with hoist to gain access to pulley bolt and REMOVE WITH AIRGUN!!!! i read that three times before i did the job but all was/is well.

I'm sure it is/would be fine :) but it doesn't seem right in my mind to lift the entire weight of the engine by the inlet manifold :o

I'm sure that they've thought it all through, but why not lift from the eye mounted to the block at the back? Any other lifting eyes near the front?

Strange they have some kind of tree/plant in the background of that factory floor dont you think?

Perhaps it's the 'AMG Tree' as seen on their logo (see my Avatar ;))

I think this thread is just an excuse for a gratuitous engine shot...:D

And Jonny, I'm going to let you know now... You never ever need an excuse...;)

Unprotected aluminium will always eventually form a surface coat of aluminium oxide. Its the equivalent of rust on steel.
Removing it and leaving it without a permanent protective finish like a specialist high temperature paint or varnish will always result in the oxidisation layer reforming. Wax will help but only until its weathered away. Its not a permanent protection.
Aluminium is also the sacrificial anode when it comes in contact with a dissimilar metal like stainless steel or cadmium due to galvanic reaction.

Aluminium and its alloys are best left alone to form this oxide coating as its it own natural weather barrier unless you REALLY want to remove it.
If Mercedes or AMG thought that this was in any way harmful, then they would have done something about it at the design stage. But obviously they didnt. They know their stuff and you/we should trust their judgement.

Cheers Dave - I suppose I can live with the slightly less than perfect look. Might just try a little area and see how easy it is to polish though....

Trees are used in enginer manfuacture sites to create the correct humidity.
They seem to be more prominent around high performance ones, ferrari use them in their factories.

isn't the humidity control more for the workers level of feel good rather than anything technical?

Im sure dehumidifiers would do the job a lot more effectively that a plant!
