AMG Instrument Cluster Change 160mph - 200mph/320kph

Hi all,

I am hoping someone can help me, I have read a lot of forums and researched many sources on the internet but I am struggling to find concrete answers to my question.

I have a 2003 E55 AMG - Instrument gauge reads 160mph
I now live in Germany and use the autobahn almost daily (Sunday morning the autobahn is empty!!!!!!) My car is de-restricted and the only way I know how fast I am going is using a GPS app.

I would like to know if it is possible to change my 160mph instrument cluster, for a 2005/6 E55 AMG version which reads 200mph/320kph and then programme it to work accurately in my 2003 model AMG?

So far people talk about changing KPH on the digital dial (I know I can do this I have done it but that stops at 259kph while GPS clocked me at 300kph before.
I have heard this and that but I cant find a definitive answer as of yet.

I don't really care if its mph or kph (I can easily change the dials later) but my query is:
Can it be done with the right specialist and programming?
Or am I out of luck on this occasion?

Any knowledge, tips or advice truly welcomed.

I don't know the answer but I was under the impression that all AMG cars came with a 200 MPH instruments as part of the AMG brand (along with the AMG V8/Kompressor typeface) . I didn't realise that earlier models had 160MPH Instruments , I wonder when that changed , my 2006 has 200 MPH instruments...but almost no chance of seeing 200 MPH

The cluster was changed to the 200mph clock in the E55 late 2004 with the 805 model update. Prior to that it had the 160mph clock.

The change is possible but coding needs to be done to transfer the correct mileage to the new cluster.
I believe member Alps changed his cluster to an updated one along with the coding ( 200mph W211 CLS63 one?)
He is the best person to speak to regarding the method used to change clusters.

CLS63 AMG Cluster Fitted | Electronics and Audio

Well i finally found a few hours to carry out my next mod, got hold of a Brand new CLS63 cluster which i installed in the silver surround off my E55 cluster to make it look just like the newer 63 models. Mileage transferred from the car together with all the service settings after abt 2 hours...

have done it plenty of times.
- firstly get a CLS or w211 200 mph cluster - facelift 63 ones also fit
- get the cluster zeros out (so milage reads zero) - without this STAR will not program an old cluster.
- replace cluster using star to save all the settings and recode the 200mph one like it was a new cluster, all your milage service history etc all gets transferred over.

Yes you would think a car capable of 200mph would have more than 160mph on the dial lol
I dont know what Mercedes were thinking but it took until 2005 for them to realise they cocked up haha
And to think these cars are built in Germany....with the Autobahn....with no speed limit

Maybe it was UK spec cars as our restricted and cars limited to 155mph

Either way....poor show!!

Legendary response thanks. late 2004 you say? typical I buy a 2003....but I waited a year to find a 2005/2006 model but they never show up for sale

Im trying to source a new cluster currently. Preferably with 320kph as I have my E55 in Germany then I can have mph on the digital reader.
So for Star tech I guess I need to find a specialist in MB cluster repairs or replacements? And get the zeros out, this is done on the Star software? Or something I should do?

If you know anyone I can approach to do these works for me I would be grateful or even pointing me in the right direction.

My car will be going to MSL Performance in a couple of works for some mods and tuning tweaks. They are happy to look at it but they are not 100% they can guarantee it works.
Maybe if pass your comments on to them they might have a better idea of what to do

If you’re simply driving at that speed because you live in Germany and regularly using the autobahn to travel long distances quickly - and not doing a “personal best” top speed run - do you really need the speedometer above 160 mph?

In such circumstances knowing how fast you’re actually going isn’t really important is it, as you’re not moderating your speed to avoid break the speed limit? Nott having to look at the speedo is an advantage, as you’ll spend less time looking at it!

Does seem odd, as even my baby AMG (older than the original posters) speedo reads to 180. Still not enough though lol

any milage correction person should be able to sero the cluster out, the reprogramming needs to be done via star

Above 160mph I wouldn't want to take my eyes off the road to begin with

This is very helpful thank you. I have a 2020 SL500, which also has had work done and goes off the clock very quickly on the Autobahn. I'd like to fit and AMG 200 mph cluster. I've seen one on eBay from an R231 SL63, but was worried about the whole coding issue. Do you think it could be fitted into my car by someone with a Star and knowledge? Could that person be you (I'm also in Essex). Happy to pay of course.

You need a milage correction person to zero the cluster out.

Then you need someone with STAR to program the cluster to your car, part of the process is to copy all settings inc milage onto the cluster.

2020 will have all the latest modules, so will need someone with online STAR to be able to do that for you.

PS, If you have a car that can go over 160, I don't' think it's pointless to change the clock. This is a short video clip I did for a friend last week on the Autobahn near Dresden. He wanted to know how quickly it went off the clock from 100mph (doesn't take long). Car just has a Renntech map and pipes plus vMax edit.

When I was living out in Germany in 2009, I found that driving above 160mph for prolonged periods is outside my comfort zone.
