And now for something a little different and rare!

I can't read German , but unless it has a couple of RSJ's bolted underneath and another one behind the rear seat , it's gonna handle like a jelly.

I like it - apart from the steering wheel.

I agree though, unless its been heavily strengthend it would shake like it was stuck together with self-tappers!

Indeed very rare but the roofs a right mess !

chucking it through bablefish gives you this

I like the colour combo for a summers day and I like the shape of the car without the roof, however the roof is a disaster,

Looks great apart from that nasty hood. Would have been nice as a coupe instead :)

There are still companies in germany making TUV approved (Thus they are handling and crash tested) conversion kits for lots of models, i can buy a kit for my coupe for around 3 grand, they even do kits for 4 doors!

Sorry to Hijack the thread, but it wasnt just the 80's, check this from the late 1990's... or maybe the back just rusted away? ;)

The company that did the conversion is called schulz.

I like it. yes the roof is a nail and will be a bit of money but its certainly a rare beast (probably with good reason!)

They used to do V8 conversions and coupe conversions, too :D

Quite why someone would want to but a 190 and give it a V8 Coupe conversion is beyond me, though.....I mean Mercedes built a 500SEC at the same time, and it would have been a hell of lot cheaper!

Yeah, but the SEC handles like a Cruiseliner....the 190 2.3-16 is one of the best handling factory MBs of all time...

I didn't think of the handling aspect.
But if you buy a 190E, then send it to a tuner for a V8 and Coupe converstion, wouldn't that mess up the handling anyway, with the added weight up front, as well as the - I should imagine necessary - strengthened body? (Back then, I would guess a strengthened body would mean more weight, rather than a stiffened shell?)

Darren

Has the roof off that car been taken from the convertible Espace built by Mssrs Clarkson, Hammond & May ? :D

Indeed. Some time ago I had somebody behind me mount a kerb at damaging speed in his AMG SL barge trying to keep up with my 2.3-16 on a twisty road. I can only guess he thought he'd bought a sports car.

alloy V8 probably dont weigh much more than the iron 4 pot in a 190, and if you havent driven a short wheelbase, lightish car with a big chunky V8 in it you need to try one, theres also the suprise factor of it, i loved my 220bhp mk5 cortina, chasing proper sports cars up the road in a tatty Ford that was smoking the tyres in 3rd gear was so much fun. :D
