Another experiment to try.

Saving is one thing - does the environment not count for anything? burning contaminated used engine oil has got to release some nasty stuff - not to mention the additives in the stuff when it was new.

I have given up smoking and buying so much Diesel from the pumps so I am helping in some little way maybe??

Can and is done:

http://www.almc.army.mil/alog/issues/NovDec03/Blending_Used_Oil_Vehicle.htm

but using engine oil as fuel is death on a stick for Catalytic Converters.

The phosphorus, sulphur and metals content in the oil additives kills 'em, which is why modern cars (EU4) require use of oils with a lower additives package, which is what the MB229.31 and 229.51 oils specs represent.

EU3 cars have Cats. as well but even though less sensitive to contamination not a good idea.

So older cars fine. Newer ones at your peril.

I would imagine used engine oil to contain all kinds of metals, possibly even the odd 'big' bit here and there.

I wouldn't put any in mine unless it was an emergency.

By the way you can also run diesels off ATF and power steering fluid.

good luck with your experiment olly!

Joby.

Interesting comments.

The Golf is driving perfectly so far.

Probably will - the skin is peeling off people following it , but it is driving OK though.

Amazing isn't it? if you even suggest using normal power steering fluid in a merc it will disintegrate and yet you can run your trusty old plodder on mashed potato

Next week I am going to pee in the tank.

Do you think that will cause harmful pollution:crazy:  :D

No but old oil will, and I can't see why you would wan't to do it.

I am just curious about it really. As I have to watch the pennies very closely this time of year "Every Little Helps".

It seems to me that burning old oil in an uncontrolled manner would be about as public spirited as pouring it down the drain or dumping it by the side of the road - It will burn and make those lumpy round things go up and down but there are many other things that would be a good deal less toxic to save money with .

In the great scheme of things a gallon of old oil now and again is nothing , just a me dumping that load of junk in Farmer Chalfont's hedge doesn't really matter....

These pulpits are really much too small to be preaching all day.

Label inside fuel filler door

'Some kindly personage in Deutschland affixed the red label just under the fuel fill during assembly of the vehicle. It reads: DIESEL NO ADDITIVES(of course
back then we could pump real diesel fuel at the stations...Now it's supposed
to be ULSD [Federal regulations require the refiner/jobber to mix in additives
to make up for the loss of lubricity inherent in the ULSD (as opposed to LSD)])
BUT people in the refining industry here in the Colonies relate the only
"additive" being used is "Bunker C" in up to 30% ratios by the oil companies.
Buying diesel fuel here in the U.S. is like buying pet food from China...You
have absolutely no idea what you're pumping into your tank!

Your injectors and Injection pump will not like the chemical composition
present in the used motor oil...The newer the automobile the faster the
degradation of the fuel delivery system.

I still cant get my head round using engine oil in a diesel fuel system. It goes way past anything I was taught. Injector and pump wear is a definate side effect if you don't get it right.

If you get stopped by Vosa / traffic, will you get done if they check your tank ?

Ive been using atf to prime diesel filters for years. Been known to dispose of the old stuff in the fuel tank from time to time . (Nissan and Toyota 4wd's)

Bazzle

I've always used diesel . Isn't ATF more expensive ?

The old VDub is still plodding away on the oil.

The oil in question was used Mobil 1. I wonder if the quality makes any difference.
