Another voice of the 20th century has died. Sir Charles Wheeler whose journalistic career spanned such historic events as the D day landings, the Hungarian uprising, the invasion of Tibet by China, the race riots of the sixties in America, the assassination of Martin Luther King, the anti Vietnam war campaign, Kennedy's assassination, the Moon landings,Watergate and Nixon's subsequent impeachment, the fall of the Berlin wall, the first war with Iraq and the plight of the Kurdish refugees afterwards, was the archetypal BBC reporter. He's up there with the other broadcasting giants like Arvall Liddell,Richard Dimbleby and Robin Day whose voices are woven into the consciousness of people who lived through these events and watched the pictures unfold on their flickering black and white televisons sets. He was still working in radio virtually to the end.
