'05 CLK 200 auto Convertible. silver with blue hood.
Getting confused again, which antifreeze should I use in an '05 CLK convertible 1.8 ? Blue or red ? I know they don't mix.

What I'm trying to find out is, do Mercedes use IAT or OAT ?

Coolant & Antifreeze Explained
quote courtesy of hotrodder:-
The coolant MB supply is typically G48 or G05 both of which are HOAT. G48 can be green, blue or various bluey greens/greeny blues depending on brand. G05 is typically dyed yellow/amber.
If you click the Bevo link in the post above yours table 3 shows various coolant specs 325.x is concentrate, 326.x is pre mixed stuff
325.0 is the usual spec for passenger cars and the approved coolants are typically the aforementioned G48 and G05. A w203 would've been filled with one of these when new i believe, exact flavour and colour would depend on who MB were buying coolant from at the time...
325.5 is a newer spec and the approved coolants are typically G40 (Si-OAT)

Well just to add my thrupence worth when in doubt use Zerex . Its a mixer for the most part!
I have this cheat sheet taken from a web site which is applicable on both sides of the pond and for multi-makes.
HOAT is a hybrid and came about because BMW got the wind up along time ago about hard water.
The Asian manufactures got concerned & then jumped on the band wagon too.
On this side North American water is softer than Euro water but the same rules still apply!

B 325.0 - Anticorrosion/antifreeze agents (Specification 325.0) - Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Operating Fluids

List shows Zerex G05 and zerex G48, which is the BMW Coolant.

Check these out for specs on G 48 and G 05

For US: Zerex Glysantin

For UK: BASF Glysantin

G 05 is the stuff under Mercedes label.

G 48 is the stuff under BMW, Porsche, Audi, Saab, Volvo labels.

They're identical except G 05 has nitrites, G 48 is nitrite-free. Both are extended life Hybrid OAT, as opposed to Dexcool OAT, both-phosphate free, both low silicate (cca 250 ppm).

In US, G 05 was Ford approved last year and was Daimler-Chrysler approved 3 years ago. Walmart and Autozone are supposed to start carrying it is Zerex G 05. G 48 looks harder to get at discount mass retail, but I think I wouldn't hesitate to substitute G 05.

Bottom line is, it's all called Glysantin - BASF for Europe and Valvoline/Zerex brand for N. & S. America.

Just info maybe useless for some!

(Just need a degree in applied chemistry as a mechanic to grasp all this ! ):)

That's great guys, thank you very much. This is turning out to be a brilliant forum. :D

Well that's put the cat among the pigeons, I had to use a slip of white paper to find out the colour, and it's orange.

COLOUR isn't really important unless you are comparing products from the same manufacturer. As long as it meets MB 325.0 it will be fine.
