People who (illegally) use red diesel in their cars, particularly common rail injection ones, generally report that they get less mpg, that the engines are noisier and produce more smoke than when they use clear diesel. I always understood that red diesel was the same as clear diesel but with just the red dye added. It is hard to believe that the dye of itself would make an engine noisier or more smoky. I would have thought that red diesel would have the normal amounts of sulphur (unlike,eg, city diesel) and therefore would help avoid premature failure of the fuel pump. Can anyone throw any light on the matter please?
