Hi I did a stupid thing and put petrol in, did 50 miles and it pretty much stopped, got the tank drained new filter, air filter, other bits, put £40 in the tank pluss a diesel additive, car ran rough as I was told to do the Italian tune, I have since gone through £200 of fuel and its still missing running rough and kicking smoke out, I have cheched the egr isnt stuck and the computer shows no codes? Any sugestions

Hi I worked for the large van comany the this was a weekly occurrence we found that the small common rail Diesel engines you could get away with it once poss twice the with petrol lacking the lub elements that diesel has the high pressure pump would fail even damage the injectors as these run at very fine to tolerances and only need the small little wear and they fail. I would try millers diesel additive there's nothing loss part from a few quid.

I find it difficult to believe theres no codes if its belching out smoke - what did you read it with?

You are going to waste money guessing and randomly replacing stuff, get it diagnosed properly.
Fault codes?
Remove and drain the new filter to check for swarf?
Rail Pressure?
Injector leak off test?

As previously mentioned, petrol is a solvent, diesel is a lubricant and the injection system works in very fine tolerances on a common fail system.
Lots of variables can cause the fuel not to ignite properly.

Thanks James, it was a standard diag computer, gonna use a different car over winter, and pull the Merc apart when it gets warmer, test injectors ect, pull the egr off and clean it properly, and take all your advice. Btw all codes cleared then no errors showing after running for a while???? So get a new head on soon, and get it sorted, Thanks again everyone. Cars dont agree with me (((
