As the title asks is it straight forward and where is tyhe best place for a battery?

One word of advice. The iphone is assembled in such a way that taking it apart (although not difficult) can cause more problems than you started with. It can also lead to premature aging, irrational loss of temper and spousal abuse.

Add to this the fact that the phone may never work again and you get my point.

Have you tried all the battery saving tips before you embark on the change.

Push is a battery killer
Auto backlight is a killer
Notifications killer..

I changed the battery in my Mum's iPhone 3.

After watching it being done on Youtube a few times, it ended up being fairly straight forward.

I understand the 4 is a lot more delicate inside, and I don't doubt this. I'd previously dropped the 3 innumerous times (when it was mine) and there was never any damage, but I've seen and heard of heaps of 4s with broken screens, so be careful if you decide to go in.

As a committed (or should be committed) i-phone user & business user. I have found that even phones that appear to have crocked batteries can be revived. Ensure that the battery is completely drained - cant switch on phone and holding down the power button gives absolutely no display - not even the red battery warning.

Charge the phone on the mains for 24 hours.

Disable anything that you do not use.

As said above push mail and auto screen brightness are the two biggest killers, followed closely by notifications. 3G is always a battery muncher on any phone. If you live in an area wgere the phone signal is weak that is a huge drain as the phone is constantly hunting for the strongest signal.

Turning off push made a mahoosive difference to my battery life.

My mate does IPhone stuff cheaper than Apple if you wanna give him a try .. He is on Facebook and I can put him in touch with you if you want ..

Only ever done a 3GS before but all I would recommend is this: make sure the battery you buy has the same part no as the one replaced. The reason for this is software related - I did this very mistake and bought the wrong battery, symptoms included battery not accepting the charge and the battery symbol to top right hand corner displaying a 'plug' instead of the expected lightning symbol.

Oh, and eBay is cheapest for sourcing a new battery, just make sure you include the word 'genuine' in your search.

Just don't do what one of our customers did to his iphone before bringing it to us for repair.

He was removing the screen as he had seen on youtube and this bit of tape was getting in the way so he cut it.

Upon reassembling the phone he found that the digitiser/screen no longer worked.

Guess that wasn't a bit of tape after all.

If you're anywhere near Walton-On-Thames I can point you towards an iphone/ipad/ipod repairer.
