I test drove a Viano 3.0CDI yesterday, but as its a new engine (the same 3.0 diesel from the new S-Class) there are none for sale used or on the dealers network. Not sure I really want to order a new one for £34,000 which is what it was time I specced it up a bit as the first 12 months depreciation looks horrendous. I know a new car is never a sound financial move but the Viano looks particually heavy.

Just wondered if anyone had 2.2CDI and wondered what they thought of it? I've heard its a bit loud on the motorway compared to the 3.0 as it strains that bit more.

I'm thinking of getting a 2.2 if they're not too bad, keeping it for a year then trying to pick up a one year old 3.0. But if peoples experiences arent great with the 2.2 I might just stump up for the 3.0

You need to talk to kikkthecat - Ray. He has a 220cdi Viano. I know he really likes it. It's a beautiful looking vehicle but I haven't been for a drive in it yet so can't comment on the engine noise.

Well the 2.2 has less bhp (150 vs 204), less torque, and less refinement (4 cys vs 6). The only answer really is to drive one and see what you think.

The 3 litre has been around for a little while (seem to remember June 2006), but probably not a big seller so you're unlikely to (m)any for sale yet. I see a couple quite regularly on the Strand in London (plus lots of 2.2s).

BTW there's quite a waiting list for the V6 ... I've had a Vito Dualiner on order since April ... latest estimate for delivery is early August.

I have a 2.2 CDi Viano and get on with it really well. Because of its size parktronic is a must have extra.
Up to 65/70 on a motorway it's reasonably quiet but at higher speeds or under load the engine noise can be a bit intrusive but then I've never exceeded the speed limit with clients onboard. There is also a lot more tyre noise than I'm used to (it has GoodYear eagle NCT5's on) and I'll be looking for a quieter tyre come the day it needs them.
As for loud compared to the 3.0CDi I couldn't say as I've never driven one but I imagine with the engine straining less at speeds then it will be a lot quieter. They also did a V6 petrol version which I have driven and is silky smooth and quiet but far too thirsty. Now mines loosened up a bit I'm getting around 37/38 MPG at motorway speeds fully laden.

I haven't considered depreciation as the car is earning more than it's depreciating so I'm not overly concerned just yet.

There are very few cars out there that can carry 6 adults and 6 suitcases or 6 sets of golf clubs, the only other I know of is the VW transporter and that is really loud and rough compared to the Viano.

Dont even bother looking at the Trend version, for the minimal extra cost of upgrading to Ambiente spec you get Air con, leather, Auto box with tiptronic, cruise control, speedtronic, fold away table and fridge.
Mine also has 6 disc CD changer, privacy glass, seperate Air con in the rear, pre wire telphone and an aftermarket DVD system with 6 disc changer, twin 10.4" Alpine screens and cordless headphones.

Viano is the big people carrier not a van - that would be the Vito.

The Vaneo - {shudders} - is the small A class x Van affair.

viano is a vito with windows then?

With a bit more refinement:rolleyes:

The Vaneo looks like a Kangoo type thing with an A class nose. I drove one once - never ever again.

Oh i remember it now. it looks like a berlingo type car /peugeot partner with 7seats. i wish they would use distinct names.

Anyway bring on the rodius.
how mercedes got involved in this i can not understand.

Yup, so's a Traveliner (a more basic minibus version) and a Dualiner (seats and windows in the middle, load space at the back.)

Well, it has carpet :)

Apart from that the Viano is really more of a 'special edition', i.e. it has as standard a lot of things that are options on the Vito. You can spec. up a Vito Traveliner to be virtually identical to a Viano, but of course it would end up costing more.

Same applies to the VW Caravelle vs Transporter / Shuttle.

Loving the Vaneo haters... had ours for 18mths and love it, nothing this small has such interior space.

(we may go viano or caravelle next, the last viano we borrowed was falling apart ith only 2k on the clock so didn't inspire confidence)

Thanks for all the great replies, especially kikkthecat for that detailed writeup! I think I'll keep an eye out for a 2.2CDI, but I'm after the X-Long so might be in for a bit of a wait for the right car.

Thanks guys,

Mark
