I've just spent my first week with a 1998 C43AMG and read alot of threads detailing some horror stories.
My new purchase has a full MB stamped history from new along with all previous MOT's and some tax discs.
Along with this i have receipts for 4 wheel alignment, 2 lower ball joints and steering damper, transmission oil and filter, air con diagnostic check, replaced condensor and re-gas, new brake light switch and a rectified water leak in the passenger footwell.
Along with a re-furb of the std AMG mono blocks, there isn't even as much as a stone chip on the nose. Leather is mint and the headlining looks new.
As it's just turned 98,000 miles, does this appear to be a decent honest and well cared for example, or are there any tell tales i'm overlooking from previous abuse.
Concerned about gearbox failures posted at 100,000 miles. Is this a common fault or just a rare fluke? Any opinion would be appreciated.

They are solid but im afraid the gearboxes are a common failure... It all depends on how the car is driven... I have seent hem go at 50K and many last over 150K...

Its a chance you will have to take if buying a C43.

Thanks for the reply.
It's a risk i'm willing to take to have a car that so far i'm delighted with.
Do the boxes give any signs of packing in or do they just give up?
Fingers crossed it's not an issue that i will have to rectify any time soon.
Any ideas on prices for a new, fitted unit. I've seen a thread stating £2k from MB, which doesn't seem too bad, but i'd imagine that doesn't inclde the plumbing in!
