I am finding that the batteries (Energizer Ultimate Lithium -expiry 2040) only last a couple of months. Is this normal?

I always use rechargeable in mine, and obviously it depends how much you use the mouse, mine last about a month with approx 4-5 hours per day usage.

There is also a slight problem with batteries, they loose connection occasionally and I have inserted two small pieces of foil on the spring end of the batteries if that makes sense.

Yes, I find they drink batteries for fun regardless of the batteries used.

I tried the foil trick but it didn't make any difference.

Unfortunately yes, that seems to be the case. I'm forever telling the kids to remember to switch it off when not using.
I know it's not much consolation but the rechargeable devices (trackpad, keyboard, etc.) seem to last ages between charges so may be a better bet.
