Hi all

Just back from a long overseas trip and brain not functioning well :-)

I have a Denon amp (think model 720ae) that feeds speakers in my kitchen and garage from various sources, dab radio, sky box and Bluetooth link.

On the back of the amp is a pre out which is 2 x RCA phono jacks

My question is could I use this pre out to feed a Yamaha soundbar in my conservatory?

My alternative is to feed from my main Yamaha home cinema receiver but there is no pre out on this unit but there is a tape out which I believe is used to provide a signal for recording, is this signal a pre amp signal of the same power as a pre out signal?

Any help appreciated

The Pre Out phono connections will vary with the volume control, while Tape Out will be fixed level. Does that help?

As above.

Most soundbars have phono connections so you should be able to use the pre-out connections on the Denon, which will then control the volume.

Do NOT use the tape out, this would effectively be at maximum volume level.

EDIT: Actually, if the soundbar has its own volume control you could use the tape out phonos (probably!).

Brain is starting to work now so another question. If I feed the soundbar from either the Denon pre out or the Yamaha tape out am I likely to get a sound delay? I can correct this on the Yamaha as it has off set sync capability but the Denon does not so this could also influence the way I go Sorry for all the questions

Ps Soundbar does have it's own volume control

You'll be connecting the soundbar in the analogue domain, not digital, so don't see why there would be any sound delay vs the other speakers connected to the Denon amp (which I presume for this purpose is connected via an analogue connection to the output of the Yamaha receiver).

Again, as above.

Since the soundbar has its own volume control I would feed it from the tape out connections from the Denon (if fitted) or the Yamaha. The signal level will be higher than via the pre-out and will help minimise electrical noise/interference/hum/etc. Also, it will be easier to adjust the volume levels to suit the different rooms.

How are the devices connected to the TV ?

If by HDMI then you might need to feed the sound bar from a digital TOSLINK on the TV to retain synchronisation.

You'll know immediately if you have a problem.

There is no connection between the Yamaha and Denon they are two separate systems running in and feeding separate rooms but I could feed the conservatory from either, hence why I'm unsure of the best route but the Yamaha and tape out is looking the favourite at the min based on the above

Thanks for all the help so far

This is exactly what I'm worried about TV fed via HDMI but no option to feed soundbar from a toslink has to be fed from Denon amp or Yamaha receiver, hence my concern, either way it's a significant cabling job so don't want to get it wrong

Just thinking what about using the optical out on the Yamaha to a toslink RCA converter but then would this be out of sync with the analogue output of the other speakers ?

I suspect you need to use a pair of analogue phonos to feed the sound bar from the receiver.

Does the sound bar have switchable inputs for DVD / Bluray ?

Can feed from the tape out on the Yamaha that's the only phono output I have available

Can feed from either tape out or pre out on Denon via phono

Soundbar not switchable straight forward phono input only

If the receivers are in a different room then go with the tape out (fixed vol) and alter the listening level in room by the sound bar remote.

Using the pre-out would rely on using the receiver for controlling volume and that might be a royal PITA

Will give that a go as its my easiest option :-)

Many thanks
