Auto Gearbox Leak

I would suggest it is inspected by someone who knows what they are doing such as a Mercedes specialist and get it scanned for fault codes.

If it needs a new conductor plate these are not that expensive but as minimum you really should get the fluid changed and the transmission cooling circuit reinstated.
It's one of the most highly rated specialists on here that do all the work on it. Stars fault code was failing clutch in the gearbox, said not worth cost of gearbox rebuild.

Taking their advice went well for you!

It wasn't, it was factual.
Not at all, taking their advice saw my car to 217,000 miles. They are not saying it's not repairable, just that it's not worth the expense.

Their advice re the gearbox bypass is clearly what is in question.

It sounds like a pragmatic approach given the value of the car. Your suggestions, while valid, would be costly.
But it seems to have been a factor in failure.

No manufacturers fit components based on the 'might be useful one day " criteria and the OP states that after the modification to remove the transmission cooling he spent a week driving in the Lake District which is not quite as flat as Norfolk. 🤔

You seem to be ignoring that there had already been issues with the gearbox and speaking as if the issue only started after bypassing the transmission oil cooler. Nobody is claiming parts are fitted for might be useful one day but yes a little read will show that transmission oil coolers are fitted for towing, use in very hot climates etc. none of which apply to my car.

Are you a Mercedes engineer? You've already suggested seeing a specialist when the specialist working on my car has the latest Stars diagnostics.

A l"ittle read"to use your phrase isn't required though.

Your car was fitted with the cooler as standard and Mercedes knew it was being sold in the UK. Why did they do that? (Rhetorical)

A "little read" might help you understand that many lubricants and other fluids have an optimal operating range with regard to temperature and pressure if they are to maintain their correct characteristics without breaking down .

Frankly I don't care. You took a chance, it didn't work out, a pity but thats all there is.

I really cannot be bothered with this anymore or you so the ignore list will be very useful. I doubt that will keep you quiet though.

👍

Very amusing post, you sound like one of those people who can't bear to be wrong so just ignores points that are brought up in a discussion but never mind, if that makes you feel better then great.

I can explain it to but I cannot understand it for you and I am not bothered about being wrong but in this instance I suspect not.

Good luck with your search for your replacement vehicle 👍

Why would I need a replacement car if the car is drivable? As mentioned the hanging in gear happened twice, fortunately it has not happened since.

Thought you would be pleased to see replacement car not been required. 220,000 miles now on the clock.

" a little read will show that transmission oil coolers are fitted for towing, use in very hot climates etc...."

Not quite true. My C55 AMG has two transmission cooling 'radiators' in series . And it's a car that is not homologated to legally have a tow bar fitted to it. The same with most , AMG's I believe.

I understand balancing cost of repair with the value of the car but if the rest of the car is solid this is not a particularly bad transmission to re build. Part kits have long been available, not suggesting you break out the spanners yourself , but it's doable.
